RIP Peggy Webber, who died this past weekend at 100.
She may have been one of the most prolific actors still with us from the Golden Age of Radio, having logged thousands of appearances on everything from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to playing Ilsa in a serialized version of Casablanca (1944).
She was Lady Macduff in Orson Welles’s 1948 film of Macbeth and had a juicy little part in Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man (1956). Worth noting the leading lady from that film, Vera Miles, is still with us at 95.
Speaking of Hitchcock, she appeared in a Rebecca take-off called The Screaming Skull (1958), something of a horror classic now:
Webber was also all over TV, including Submarine Command (1951), five episodes of Dragnet (1952-1955), eight episodes of Dragnet 1967 (1967-1970), two episodes of Night Gallery (1971-1972), The Waltons (1976), Bosom Buddies (1981) and voice work on The Smurfs (1983-1984) as Elderberry.
Preceded in death by her second husband Sean McClory in 2003, she is survived by her three children, her seven grandchildren and her three great-grandchildren.⚡️
