When the Wind Is Against You

It’s so easy to see Peter in Matthew 14:22–33 because, honestly, I recognize him. I know what it is to feel brave for a moment — to take the step, to believe I can trust the voice of Jesus — and then suddenly notice the wind and think, “Oh no. Nope. This was a mistake.”

There are seasons when faith does not feel like calm confidence. It feels more like trying to keep your head above the waves. It sounds more like one honest sentence prayed from the deep place: “Lord, save me!” (Or, if we’re being really honest: “Lord, save me… again.”)

What should move us all is that Jesus does not wait for Peter to become less afraid before reaching for him. He does not wait for Peter to explain himself or prove that his faith is strong enough. Jesus immediately stretches out his hand and catches him.

I need that reminder. Maybe you do too. Christ does not only meet us once the storm is over. He comes toward us while the wind is still against us, while fear is still loud, while our courage is giving way. And even there, especially there, he says, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
