In this Sportfolio, we speak with Paris based photographer Juliette Denis. As a sports enthusiast, Juliette has long photographed action in the moment and directly on the field. With this series, she explores another approach: to stylise the body and mind in an imaginary competition.
Juliette Denis is a Paris-based photographer who graduated from a BTS Photo (LTAA A.Renoir - PARIS) in 2016 and then from the Ecole des Gobelins in 2019.
She defines her work as sunny and lively, and fits very well into a lifestyle, fashion, children’s fashion, sports and travel photoshoot. She takes inspiration from moments shared with family and friends, and devotes a large part of her work to personal reports where she captures the moment and the light with emotion. Her images invite us to smile and explore. She loves working with silhouettes in motion, and has developed numerous collaborations with the press, particularly children’s fashion and colourful brands.
JD: These images convey preparation, discipline and movement. They reflect the emotions associated with sporting endeavour apprehension, concentration, but also the energy that drives you to go all the way. No specific sport is represented here; it is represented with certain universal codes and postures. The clothing, make-up and decor serve to recreate the world of competition.
JD: I chose to incorporate motifs like medals, trophies and podiums. Sometimes presented in an unconventional way in a white and red setting, these elements directly evoke victory and reward.
Punctuated by primary colours, the red carpet is reminiscent of official photos or the stands that line competition venues.
JD: The entire team worked towards a common artistic direction: to create a dialogue between the worlds of sport and fashion.
This vision was realised through a carefully considered primary colour palette and an emphasis on simplicity across all elements. The make-up approach emphasized shine and rosy complexions, capturing that natural post-exercise glow.
The set design played with sport as both concept and material, exploring scale, shapes, and colours while making direct references to sports infrastructure, a disproportionate dumbbell became a sculptural fashion accessory, ribbons were wrapped and stretched taut across the space, and a pool bench was reimagined as a playful twister.
The styling brought these worlds together through fashionable silhouettes enhanced by sporty touches and select vintage pieces, creating a visual language that felt both athletic and refined.
This series is a staging of the competitive spirit, between performance and aesthetics, between effort and elegance.
