I’ve leaned into this Substack ever since rehab finished and real life began. It’s paid off. My hope of becoming a writer has led to opportunities I hadn’t imagined. It’s kept me fulfilled and facing forward.
I’ve been busy behind the scenes, as well, with something else. Tim, my partner of many years, and I have established a nonprofit.
CrashCart Pet Haven is now an official 501(c)(3). We provide short-term foster care for the pets of people entering treatment so they don’t have to choose between getting sober and keeping the animals they love.
People seeking treatment who have pets but have no one to care for them often face an impossible choice: enter a residential program that can’t accommodate animals, or stay with the companion who may be the only constant relationship left in their life. Most choose their pet. Recovery has to wait.
What began as a favor to a stranger has become a full-time vocation… and a very lively house. Since 2024, we've cared for 22 pets belonging to 17 people, removing one barrier on their path to recovery.
We're both excited about what's ahead.
This is the only time I’ll ask for support on this platform, but our initial fundraising campaign begins this month. We’re raising money to establish an emergency veterinary care fund and build an inventory of food and supplies so every pet can go home with a care package when they are reunited with their owner.
