Field notes from the crumbling American empire for Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
“Ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”
—James Baldwin
Supreme Court clears the way for Black voter suppression in Alabama
The Supreme Court, known for making reprehensible decisions that favor bigots, ruled to allow Alabama to use a redrawn congressional map with one majority-Black district instead of two, overturning a lower-court order that found intentional discrimination against Black voters. This decision, combined with SCOTUS recently gutting the Voting Rights Act, demonstrates how Alabama has just paved the way for more states to follow their lead taking representational power away from Black voters.
Judge rules “8647” is free speech
Secret Service, Park Police, and the National Park Service allegedly threatened Accountability NOW USA with prosecution or permit action over flying an “8647” flag, and today a federal judge blocked the National Park Service from revoking the group’s protest permit, ruling the flag and the message it conveyed was protected speech and obviously not a true threat aimed at Trump. James Comey will be happy to hear this.
HHS is now weighing in on science in NIH grants
HHS under Bobby Brainworm Kennedy Jr. has added a review layer for NIH-approved grants and, according to both internal documents and NIH staff, has sometimes requested changes to research scope, design, or language after peer review. Political oversight has officially moved beyond keyword policing for DEI, overreaching into substantive control over scientific work. This further proves what a great idea it was to have the guy who cuts the dicks off roadkill for funsies in charge of public health.
Former Brazilian model claims Melania Trump was an escort for Epstein before she met Trump
Former model and victim of Jeffrey Epstein, Amanda Ungaro, alleged in a now-deleted recording that Melania was introduced to Donald Trump after having worked as an escort for Epstein, and according to at least one other source, for more than a year. It’s worth noting that the claim does rest on unverified and incomplete records, but, come on—who doesn’t believe this is absolutely true?
Artisanal dread for the discerning citizen.

Trump to dismantle ocean monitoring system
The Trump regime is dismantling the $368 million Ocean Observatories Initiative, removing more than 900 deep-sea instruments used for research on climate, sea life, flooding, and ocean-current patterns. Climate scientists, coastal communities, fisheries, and international ocean researchers take the hit on this one. Congress had approved this funding, therefore, only they can legally cancel it, but there I go again using the distinction of legality when that’s long done for in America. Trump will continue to do whatever the fuck Trump wants due to the tragic condition all members of Congress suffer from: spinelessness (which has a terrible comorbidity called LookMaNoBalls.)
I personally love gratuitous MAGA on MAGA violence
After mega-MAGA racist Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) declared during Pride Month that “homosexuality has no place in America,” the rightful condemnation came from the obvious places: Democratic lawmakers, LGBTQ advocates, and even LGBTQ conservatives. But the curveball was Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), a hardcore MAGA chode who is guilty himself of wearing Blackface though he gaslights when questioned about it, saying, “The ugly practice of blackface was the furthest thing from my mind. Let me be clear, this is not that.” Right. And Ogles, having also said that “Muslims have no place in America,” has repeatedly proven himself a bigoted piece of shit, and this made me think about how casually these people appoint themselves the gatekeepers of American belonging. It’s time we throw their own white nationalist nonsense back in their pasty faces. This is America, you Nazi cunts. Don’t like it? Get the fuck out.
Boston judge critical of Trump’s mail-in voting executive order
An Obama-appointed U.S. district judge in Boston appeared profoundly skeptical of both the legality and practicality of Trump’s wildly overreaching executive order, which seeks to impose new federal rules on how states administer mail-in voting for federal elections. The case was brought by 23 Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia, which have joined voting-rights groups in an effort to block the order before the November midterms. I’ll be tracking this story for updates and will report back.
DHS chief refuses to commit to court orders
Like his fascist predecessor Kristi “Puppy Killer” Noem, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin—whose parents clearly hated him, because that particular two-name first name is an act of violence—refused to tell Sen. Chris Murphy during a Congressional hearing today whether DHS would obey federal court orders halting illegal or unconstitutional conduct by his ICE goons. Instead, Mullin kept insisting that he would never violate the Constitution while in the same breath undercutting that by suggesting that the courts are too politicized to deserve automatic compliance. In other words, he would allow a court to tell his Nazi goons to stop doing Nazi shit but only if it was a MAGA judge.
Holy shit—it just hit me. Markwayne Mullin is real-life Champ Kind.
May cause sudden loss of faith in humanity.
