HELP! MY NERVOUS SYSTEM IS AN ASHTRAY

Have you ever been late for something important and turned the entire commute into a hostage negotiation with time itself?

You’re sweating through intersections, rehearsing apologies in your head, convinced your life is collapsing because you’re twelve minutes behind schedule. By the time you arrive, your nervous system resembles an ashtray.

That’s more or less how I experienced my career.

When I was 22, the record label I was signed to suggested I lie about my age because apparently women in music industry expire somewhere between yogurt and avocados. So we shaved off four years and told everyone I was 18.

Which is funny to me now, because that particular version of Goldie was essentially a toddler wearing lipstick pretending to understand contracts. But once that seed was planted “you’re late” it stained everything. Every success. Every achievement came with this quiet voice whispering: you should’ve gotten here sooner.

Ironically, the past few years have been the most beautiful years of my life. Not because everything suddenly became easy, but because I finally stopped (or at least started trying to stop) treating my life like I was a woman frantically jogging beside it yelling, “Wait, wait, I’m coming.”

But I’m proud to be here now. Not as the youngest person in the room, but as someone finally present enough to appreciate being in the room at all. I hope my career can be an example of “its never too late” for anyone else who, like me is secretly terrified they missed their shot.

Maybe the right moment isn’t the one that comes first.

Maybe it’s the one where you finally understand how to receive it.

Delays are not denials.
You’re not behind. I’m not behind.
Keep going, Love Goldie
