Wrote this a while back but seems relevant today…

Wake the fuck up

Wake the fuck up. We gotta wake the fuck up.

That doesn’t mean get all dramatic.

It just means be real.

First off, what’s happening on the planet. In the World.

Second, our own lives. Time. This brief moment. Today.

What do we do?

We wake and start another day, and we work on some stuff, and we get some tasks done.

We get distracted. We get in our routine. We follow our habits, the path of least resistance. We make our excuses.

But what are we really doing?

Wake the fuck up.

We so easily forget the preciousness of life, of each moment.

We get caught up in all these other daily little things. We say not to take life for granted, yet we do. We always do. It’s in our nature, because it’s not possible to always every day be present, in tune, in the moment. We are creatures of habit, our habits are our friends, our habits make it possible for us to function, our habits are our intention and attention training our body to run things while we’re away. We need our habits.

Yet, do we choose our habits, or do they choose us, our lives? We get so comfortable with our habits that we lose our way. We let routine and distraction take most of our attention.

So how do we wake the fuck up?

We have to find our own ways to keep it real.

Do the unexpected, challenge ourselves, force ourselves to do things out of our routine. Break our habits. Doesn’t have to be dramatic. But we each find our own ways.

Also, make new habits we want. Like actually focus on forging new neural pathways in our brains, deciding how we want to live our lives, and believe in ourselves to bring that version of ourselves into being. Make choices knowing that they build upon each other, and we each create our own future.

There’s a balance between discipline and spontaneity. Like we have to have the discipline to be spontaneous. We need to structure in some space to be creative. We have to force ourselves to break our routines, and make new ones.

We need to wake the fuck up.

We all have our dramas. We all have our traumas. We can dig into that stuff. There’s truth there, and there’s juice there, inspiration, meaning, understanding, experience, motivation, expression, empathy. So squeeze it. But… don’t drown in it.

Maybe positive is boring. Or missing its target. Sometimes the last thing I want is some kind of motivational talk or inspirational podcast or news story to make me feel how lacking I am being present and improving myself and making new habits and being the best version of myself I can be.

Often I just want a distraction. I just want a warm feeling of basic security, and acceptance, and a relief from the feeling of having to always be doing something, something, to wake the fuck up and try to make me and the world a better place.

But still, I do want to wake up. Serious, wake up. Wake the fuck up!
