When I created Goju Tech Talk (GTT) in March of 2025, I had a simple mission:
GTT would be a place where people who deeply care about their own and others growth could come together to learn from and teach each other.
We would work together to advance the world’s scientific and technological advances in a global way.
It was a simple, but big mission (no one has ever accused me of dreaming small).
Now that we’ve been going for over a year and are producing content on ~10 different social media sites (including this one) with an audience of millions of people spanning the entire globe, I wanted to give a quick update on two fundamentally important things.
GTT’s Discord & YouTube Memberships
As per always, I’m super short on time. So, let’s get into it.
The core of GTT’s community is on Discord (at least for the time being). This is where we plan things, discuss things, and generally build rapport with each other. While I haven’t finished the GTT Manifesto, if you’re reading this, you may already know that my mission with GTT is one of community building for the betterment of the human race. I set out to build a community where all people, in all walks of life, can join and participate so long as they are respectful to others. The thing that matters the most to me is working with people that care.
In the competency / care matrix, it’s my strong conviction that so long as someone deeply cares about things and has an unwaveringly positive drive, they can generally overcome all competency hurdles. This is how I created my first startup, Nodeka. This is how I got through my master’s and PhD. This is how I eventually landed as an adjunct at Stanford. It wasn’t due to some blazing intellect, no matter what people tell you. It was principally due to two things:
Deeply caring about things (not on “how to make a quick buck”)
Pursuing those things with unrelenting determination and positivity, no matter the setbacks
A big part of my creation of GTT was to find other like-minded people. I had an unwavering conviction that they were other people out there that were just like me. People who also deeply wanted to find a community that they could be a part of and feel like they’ve found their “new home.” I can see now that this is what GTT is becoming for many people. I love that.
After one year of doing this, we are on the verge of a major breakthrough. We are building our community of deeply technical, highly motivated people who want to help make a better world for all of us. My initial thesis has been validated: there are other like-minded people in the world that care first and foremost about their own and others growth. People who aren’t principally motivated by money, but instead are motivated by making things “better.” I refer to these people as the missionaries of the world. I consider myself as one. And frankly, anyone who is a missionary is someone that I not only will immediately gravitate toward, but will fit in perfectly in the larger GTT community that we’ve built and continue to build every day.
You can join the Discord for free and with zero obligation to do anything. Many of the GTTers who join our Discord simply hop on the server to just see what everyone is talking about. And believe me, once you join, you will quickly see that there are a lot of interesting things being discussed on a daily basis. In fact, this is principally what I do on the Discord server. I am mostly in the background learning from others and often times I read the discussions to help me determine what I should be talking about next in the live streams or the videos. I love that.

Historically, we’ve only had YT subscriptions for GTT. Recently, I decided to create a paid membership section (i.e., monthly subscription). I did this for a few very specific reasons. Some of the key reasons are the following:
An avenue where I could share videos that are too sensitive for public airwaves
A protection mechanism from being mined by bots
A way to get rid of ads for the more dedicated GTT community
The YT membership section gives me a path forward for all of this. Moreover, when you become a member of GTT YT, you get:
Uncut high quality live streams (immediately after live stream)
Zero YT advertisements
Special membership-only videos or live streams

Basic: $0.99 / month (access to member-only discussions)
Premier: $1.99 / month (access to ad-free videos - this is the important one)
Ultra: $4.99 / month (this is just an upgraded subscription for people who want to offer more support and aren’t monetarily constrained)

GTT will always be principally free and open to the world. This is very important to me and also why I have taught at various universities since completing my PhD. It is imperative that I “pay it forward.” GTT will always be a medium for that philosophy.
However, just like all things in life, we need a sustainable business model for GTT to exist. If we get enough members, GTT it will become self-sufficient and we won’t need paid sponsorships nor will we need to show ads in any of the GTT content. I’m looking forward to that future.

GTT has only existed for one year and the majority of that first year was me “trying to figure out what the heck I was doing.” To be honest, I still don’t know. And frankly, I probably never will (secretly, I kind of like it that way). It gives me an opportunity to grow and learn new things every day.
