Giovanna Siniscalchi · Giovanna’s Substack

Hello! Four years ago, I did something terrifying. I wrote a book set in a place so dear to me it felt almost too personal to share — the golden hills of Portugal’s Douro Valley, the country of my grandparents, a land I had been carrying in my chest my whole life. And then I sent it out into the world and held my breath.

I didn’t know if anyone would love Julia the way I did. She is stubborn, fiercely proud, and absolutely convinced she doesn’t need anyone — least of all a broad-shouldered Englishman who arrives at her vineyards believing he’s entitled to everything, including her heart. I didn’t know if readers would fall for Griffin either, with his carefully constructed plans and his infuriating habit of being right about almost everything except what actually matters. I only knew that their story felt true — as true as the smell of fermenting grapes and the heat of a Portuguese afternoon and the particular ache of loving something so hard you’d fight a plague for it.

Turns out, I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.

“All I wanted to do while reading is save for a ticket to Portugal and drink copious amounts of wine and port.”

“It’s rare that I enjoy a book so much that I’m sorry to finish reading it. I might just have to turn around and read it a second time.”

“I love a STRONG heroine and Giovanna Siniscalchi delivers.”

535 reviews later, The True Purpose of Vines has won a Literary Titan Book Award, the Highly Recommended Award of Excellence from The Historical Fiction Company, and was voted best historical romance of the year by The Chick Lit Café. But honestly? The thing that still makes me catch my breath is when a reader tells me Julia felt real to them. That is the whole reason I write.

So this week, to celebrate three years since Julia and Griffin first walked into readers’ hearts, I’m discounting The True Purpose of Vines to 99 cents.

If you’ve already read it: would you consider gifting it to a friend who loves enemies-to-lovers, forbidden attraction, and a heroine who absolutely refuses to be owned? At 99¢, it’s the most affordable way to spread the Portugal obsession.

If you haven’t read it yet… What are we waiting for?

As always, thank you for being here.

You are why I write.

With so much love and at least one glass of port,

Giovanna

P.S. If you’ve already read Julia and Griffin’s story, I’d love to know: which scene lives in your head rent-free?
