I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence by not addressing the fact that the world has once again gone NUTS!
No matter your political belief, your religion, or your sexual identity, there are reasons to wring your hands and totally stress out. I get it.
As a historian, I have endless proof that world chaos is nothing more than a cycle of human actions and reactions. There are always NUTSO things going on somewhere in the world. There are some doozies happening right now.
There has never been a time in history that groups of people haven’t dealt with the world going NUTS. Since there is no way to avoid it happening, the question for me becomes... How Then Shall I Live?
There are many people laying out just how crazy things are - detailing the events... the people... the results. I don’t need to be another of those voices. I want my voice to help you navigate these times.
Before I share my thoughts..
YES! It’s now available on Kindle Unlimited!!

HOW THEN SHALL I LIVE??
Let’s face it...
When the world has gone NUTS, there are only a handful of people who can end a war, navigate a peace treaty, or create a law. What are the other BILLIONS of people supposed to do?
Too many feel helpless, powerless, and completely overwhelmed. Understandable, but not helpful. Which means I want to give you something that is helpful and empowering!
I’m not here to give you an answer. There are lots of people in the world eager to give ANSWERS. The trouble is that no one has the “Answer”. Oh, they might help some people, but there will be scores of other they can’t help at all.
I’m not arrogant enough to believe I have the answers for YOUR life. It’s hard enough to find the answers for my own.
I can tell you, however, how to find your answer!
I’m here to tell you what I do...
This will not be a short answer, because the question is simply too important. For me, personally, I believe it may be more important than anything I have ever shared with you, and I believe you’re going to need it for every day that will unfold before you for the rest of your life. How’s that for a lead-in?
Doing it is the most important part of my day.
Doing it is the only thing that has taken me through really challenging times in my life.
Doing it is the only thing that allows me to put into practice all I’ve learned through the years.
Doing it gives me what I need to face whatever each day brings.
What is it??
Let’s dive right in because I’m so excited to tell you!
I have spent the last 30+ years working with people. Teenagers and Adults. Everyone struggles with the same things.
How to find direction.
How to find purpose.
How to know what to do with their life.
How to make the right decisions.
How to find the answers to the questions you have for your life.
You read books. You listen to seminars. You look for teachers.
But too few people (in fact MOST people) don’t do the ONE thing that will give you what you’re looking for.
Now, don’t misunderstand me. Books are great. I read all the time. Seminars are wonderful. I attend many of them. Teachers are great – I hope I’m one of them… but still, MOST people don’t do the ONE thing that will give you what you’re looking for.
The ONE THING?
One word…
LISTEN.
People don’t listen. And I don’t mean listening to other people.
I’m talking about listening to YOURSELF. Listening to a higher power. Listening to the Universe. No matter what your faith or belief system, you simply don’t listen.
You are failing to give yourself the greatest gift you could possibly give yourself.
How can you? From the minute you get up your world is full of activity and noise. You turn on the radio, stereo or television. You’re uncomfortable with too much silence. And then you fill every minute of your day with activity. Working. Talking. Texting. School. Responsibilities. Fun. Every minute is crammed with some kind of noise or activity and then you fall into bed (many of you even watching television then!) so that you can get up the next morning and do it all over again.
And yet your head spins with the questions of how to find direction, purpose and answers. How to make sense of the world you live in.
How exactly do you think the answers are supposed to filter through all the noise and activity??
It’s a lot like trying to bash through a concrete wall in order to get into a building. There’s a door right there, but you don’t step back long enough to see it – you just keep bashing against the concrete, wondering why you can’t get to your destination.
I watch people bash against that wall every day. When I suggest they should get QUIET and listen for the answer, they look at me as if they feel sorry for my very naïve and simplistic way of them getting their answers. I mean, after all, they just got back from 4 days of a seminar that had them listening to great speakers for 12 hours. Or they just finished reading an entire series of book on their problem. It’s clear to them that they just haven’t connected with the right person or book that can give them direction.
Wrong!
What’s clear is that you can have all the information in the world, but if you don’t get QUIET for long enough to LISTEN for your answer, you will never find what you’re looking for.
And please know I’m not talking about turning off the TV for 5 minutes, and then turning it back on to fill the void when you don’t hear a booming voice that gives your answer. It’s not like that.
You have to make listening a priority. You have to make QUIET a priority in your life. Well, no of course, you don’t have to (it’s a choice), but if you want to quit floundering and being frustrated, I suggest it is something you decide to do.
The time I spend in quiet, just listening, are the most treasured and valuable moments of my day. Claiming those times is my highest priority because I know I cannot be who and what I want to be in the world if I don’t have those times. I know I can’t give what I’m meant to give without time to be quiet and listen. I know I can’t come up with answers. And I definitely know I can’t live the life I dream of living.
I know everyone has to design those times for themselves, but I’m going to share with you what they look like for me – hoping that will help you develop your own Blueprint for Listening.
When I wake up in the morning, I fix a cup of hot chocolate (yes I’m a chocolate addict, but because you’ve heard me talk so much about health, you need to know I make them with organic almond milk, organic cocoa, and stevia as my sweetener!!) Then I go to my office. I do NOT turn on my computer. Instead, I sit down at my desk and pull out my journal. I have huge ring bound notebooks full of my journaling during my life.
And then I just sit there quietly. Sometimes I sing a little. Sometimes I pray. Other times I just close my eyes and let the silence embrace me. Yes, I’m just like everyone. Sometimes my spinning thoughts are louder than the silence, but that is when I turn to my journal. The only way to quiet those spinning thoughts is for me to write them down. There is no format. This is MY journal. I just write. I pour out all the things that are inside me.
And then, if I have problems I’m dealing with, or questions I need answers to, I just keep writing. Somehow, the answers come pouring out. If I get stuck, I just put my pen down, close my eyes, and let silence wrap around me again.
I LISTEN.
I’m not saying you’re listening for a voice, though I would certainly never say you might not hear one. 😊 I’m listening for answers within. Whether your faith systems believe those answers come from a higher power or your own self, if you listen long enough and carefully enough, you will discover you have the answers.
Think about it this way… When you buy a fancy piece of electronics, don’t they come with a User Manual? The person who created it knows you need the right information to know how to use it. Right? Well, don’t you think whoever or whatever created your life, knows that you need the right information to know how to use it, and live it in the best way possible?
It’s NOT about what someone else may have written or created to tell you how to live your life – though they can certainly have value.
It’s about what was created INSIDE of you from the very beginning.
YOU have the answers for your life.
YOU are the one who knows what your purpose is.
You just have to listen long enough to discover what it is.
Now, granted, I have learned how to listen because I’ve made it a priority for a long time. Don’t think you can just decide to trot downstairs one morning with a cup of hot chocolate, pull out a notebook, start writing, and come up with all your answers.
You have to LEARN how to listen. You have to commit to choosing Quiet over frenetic noise and activity. People put such a premium value on DOING. I’ve learned my best doing comes when I first put my focus on BEING.
You have to LEARN how to hear what your heart, spirit and mind are telling you. And, folks, there is only one way to do that. You have to make it a priority.
You have to choose to LISTEN on a daily basis.
Perhaps you’ll need a small devotional or guide type book to jumpstart your heart and mind. That’s cool, but don’t turn your Listening time into reading time because then all you’re doing is listening to someone else, not to YOU.
People come to me for advice all the time. I rarely give it. Who am I to know the answers for someone else’s life, and besides that, as long as I’m the one giving the answers they can either blame me if I’m wrong, or they can blow me off because I don’t know what I’m talking about anyway.
When people come to me for advice, I usually just ask questions.
I want them to look inside themselves for their answers. I want them to think. I usually send them away with questions, tell them to get quiet, pull out a notebook and start writing the things that come to them.
Writing them is also a great way to remember the great things you come up with!
I carry a notebook around with me because I can have some of the greatest ideas and revelations in the world, but if I don’t write them down I’m probably not going to remember them when I get home! Some people might blame that on old age; I prefer to believe my mind is simply too full of powerful thoughts and information to hold it all! 😊
But seriously, I cannot possibly know what is right for someone else’s life. I have a challenging enough time knowing how to live mine.
And why would you want someone else to tell you how to live your life anyway?
It is YOUR life! YOU are the only person who can possibly know what is right for you.
A good book, seminar or teacher should ask you questions. They should open your mind to possibilities that you explore when you get QUIET and LISTEN. They should tell stories that make you think deeply – applying what works for YOUR life and tossing out the rest.
How can you possibly find directions and answers if you don’t listen?
How can you possibly know if they are the right answers for your life if you don’t listen?
How can you possibly have the confidence in your decisions if you’re not listening??
Okay, I already know what some - probably most - of you are thinking. I don’t have time to listen. Ginny, every minute of my day is already full. I’m totally stressed with all the things I have to do. I couldn’t possibly…
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Been there. Done that. Heard that. It’s not that I don’t have empathy for your busy life. I just know that you of all people should choose to get QUIET and LISTEN.
Knock something out of your schedule. Get up early. MAKE time for yourself.
There’s something else I do when I really need direction and answers. I walk away from my life and find quiet.
The magic comes from walking away from the noise, activity, and demands long enough to find my answers.
So you have to decide how to walk away from your life. And I mean really away. If you decide to go for a long walk, do it where you don’t know anyone that you’re going to need to talk to. If you decide to go to a nearby park, choose a bench that is as far away from people as possible. Claim your quiet. Claim your chance to listen. If you have to lock your doors, turn off every phone, and unplug every appliance, DO IT.
The gift you are giving yourself is beyond measure…
LISTEN.

Have you made me cry?? Or laugh?? Or made me so very glad I have the best readers in the world??
If you’ve written a review of one of my books, you probably did. :) Every time I get a little overwhelmed by the pressures of research or writing, I go to Amazon and read my Reviews. They never fail to give me the motivation and energy to continue forward.
