Last week I sang the National Anthem for the Washington Wild Things minor league baseball team. We had quite a crew there, and I’m so grateful to everyone who came out.
At one point, they announced the groups in attendance and named the “Gina Morgano Fan Club.”
I completely missed it, but I’m told it happened.
It was my first official fan club mention! Lol.
This got me thinking that everyone deserves a fan club - including you.
When people talk to me about their voice, almost everyone is haunted by unkind words and painful past experiences.
Rejection from the second-grade choir.
Told to stop singing in church.
Parents who shushed a youth’s passionate vocalizing.
These moments stay with us and shape our relationship with our voice as we grow. They influence not only our feelings about our singing voice but also our overall confidence, self-esteem, and ability to express ourselves. They make us question whether our voice is welcome in the room.
But for every sting, there are also people who want to hear you. A spouse. A neighbor. A child. Someone who keeps showing up - high notes, cracks, and all. These are your true fans.
We often assume that people don’t want to hear us when, in reality, they would love to hear us sing. Thursday night I was surprised by the little girl who was nervous to talk to me and the guy who wanted my photo (and my number!) And I certainly didn’t realize that I had an official fan club until it was announced over the loudspeaker.
But those people had been there all along.
I see the same thing with my students. The moment they start singing courageously again, their people show up.
I’d bet the same holds true for you. You’d be surprised how many people are waiting in the wings to cheer you on.
Remember: your voice doesn’t have to be perfect to make a positive difference in someone’s life. YOU are worth supporting, no matter where you are on your vocal journey.
