📌 writing I saved because it was too good

While I continue cooking up my own writing for you, I’d like to introduce you to three essays/pieces I have saved recently because I loved reading them. Let me know below if you’d like reads curated and popped into your inbox every now and again!

1. The inimitable Emma Dabiri explores the new wealth class of billionaire’s playing god and how our beauty standards reveal so much about our cultural moment and what we’ve lost getting here. Emma always manages to not only slice through layers of conditioning with such sharply constructed prose, but also makes the idea of continuing to peel them back feel not just important, but exciting.

2. Such an insightful piece on moralising and the idea of living ethically in an unethical society. It’s such a satisfyingly confronting essay, asking how we respond to the demands of morality under capitalism and it introduces the concept of “shooting and crying” which is now impossible for me to forget. Where am I shooting and crying in my life?

3. An astonishing first-hand account of being the child of a father with a self-aggrandising fantasy of frontier masculinity using “wilderness violence”. Elle Kamihira writes with sheer clarity about being led into life-threatening situations by her father, and renegotiated to safety by a mother who had learnt how to placate and secretly manage her husband. I couldn’t stop reading.
