I’m Going Out Tonight (1997)

“England now has the longest organized coastal footpath in the world.” You can dip in and out, as no one is about to walk 2,000+ miles on vacation. The Times reporter’s “devised an itinerary that would allow a sampling of three portions of the path: one on the Isle of Wight, a stretch on the Yorkshire coast south from Whitby, and the northern path out of Dover.” At the beginning of his trip, the reporter refers to staying near 1 St Boniface Gardens on the Isle of Wight, where Karl Marx wintered. I think I’d prefer to stay on Tennyson’s estate, since I’ve actually read Tennyson. (Annoyingly, he does not link to his accommodations throughout the piece; he does talk to an above average number of hikers though, which I appreciated.)

I think I’ve said this before, but Elena Clavarino is my favorite vacation reporter. (She’s technically the Deputy Editor at Air Mail, but no one does this beat better.) This week, she’s writing about “Island-Hopping Through the Dodecanese.” I started following her closely after finding her wedding content on Instagram. It’s silly to say, but a lot of people get my attention in this way. (Or my negativity. It’s so hard to look like you had fun at your wedding, which is the bar.)

The former Chief Curator at Museum of the Moving Image has launched a Substack. He really got me with this post, “The Appalachian Antonioni,” about Rob Tregenza. “Rob Tregenza has been a cinematographer for Béla Tarr and Alex Cox, distributed films by Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Haneke, and Jacques Rivette, has a PhD in theater arts from UCLA, and taught cinema for many years at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. He has also patiently carved out an impressive and idiosyncratic niche in contemporary cinema, directing six feature films that are best known for the sinuous elegance of their elaborate long takes.” I’d absolutely never heard of him. He’s got a film at MoMa TONIGHT.
