I Couldn’t Help But Wonder: When the Leaves Change… Should We?

There's something uncomfortable yet freeing about autumn. The sun retreats, the days contract, the leaves brighten — and then they fall.  A predictable, yet sudden, shift externally that fuels the internal need for a change. As the leaves began their annual dance to the sidewalks, I couldn’t help but wonder… is it the season that is shifting… or is it me?

I would like to say that it's easy to get comfortable with the comfortable — the steady pace, the norms, the surface level ease — but I know I've never known a season of genuine comfort.

What I do know: I am only content in being constantly curious // if you are not learning and growing, are you losing and contracting? // finding purpose and impact will never feel like work (even when signing onto the zoom starts to feel like it) // we have this one beautiful life, what are we waiting for? // I also know... the more I know, the more I understand how little I know.

So here I sit, on the precipice of yet another change, a shift, a fork in the road. While this one is on my professional path, the journey mirrors those personally and relationally as well. They are all matters of the heart and head — which is anything but simple.

So before discovering what needs to change, the task is to dig into the WHY. Staying curious about the whys and observing the subconscious whys feels exciting.  I guess that is the power behind being intentional.

• I want to keep learning // expanding my perspective

• I want to be in rooms + conversations with intelligent and interesting people

• I want to explore + see new things

• I want to have impact + purpose

• I want to help others have impact + purpose

• I want to grow professionally, personally, emotionally + intellectually

• I want to have new experiences and never live the same year twice

• I want to empower others to do the same

• I want to model all the above for my kids

• I want to maintain and grow my autonomy

• I want to hold space and time for consistent reflection

• I want to build beautiful things with beautiful souls
