WHAT IS THE RECRUITING TIMELINE?

All divisions are on a slightly different recruiting timetable. In Division 1 more and more schools are recruiting college transfer students first. Then moving on to fill open spots with incoming Freshmen.

Because the transfer portal opens in November, this slows the process down for most High School Seniors. It used to be that many players were committed in their Junior year. Now it is not uncommon for top level players to make their commitment in the spring of the Senior year.

Division 2 colleges and universities are typically the next to finish up their recruiting classes. Some Division 2 colleges and universities will have prospects verbally commit during the summer, but most will finish during the fall or spring of their senior year. Division 3, NAIA and Junior Colleges recruiting typically continues into the winter and spring of a student-athlete’s senior year of high school.

If you are not on track with this timeline, do not panic, these are general guidelines and every college and university has a different situation.

Parents want to give their child every advantage they can afford. Often in soccer this means hiring a personal trainer either to work on skills or on fitness. Is this a necessary part of competitive YOUTH soccer?

The simple answer is No. You don’t have to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on extra training for your kid. Don’t get me wrong, there are some excellent trainers who can make a positive impact on your child’s level of play. But is it necessary? Think of it like hiring a tutor for your child in math or english. If your kid is behind and you can’t spend the time with them, then do it. But the simple, best way to help your child improve is to spend time with them in the backyard having fun with a soccer ball. Don’t do drills. Play games. Follow the leader, tag, passing back and forth, shooting games, all are fun ways to spend time with your child. They want to spend time with you. There is nothing kids want more than to spend time with their parents. (At least until they are teens).

You can find hundreds of soccer games on the internet. Check out YouTube or any AI platform. Google: Fun soccer games I can play with my kid. If you play 15 minutes in the backyard every night, your child will improve their skills, value the time spent with you, and most importantly, not get burnt out!

When it comes to extra fitness training, the same rules apply. Find a way to play fun games in the yard. Google: fun fitness games I can play with my kid.

The more times you haul your kid off to training, the more soccer becomes work. 30 minutes each way to training equals 1 hour of fun lost each time.

If you don’t have the time, but do have the money, hiring someone to do these same games may be worth it to you. If the extra training is just extra practice time, then ask your team or club why your child isn’t getting enough good training with them?

Youth soccer players are NOT young professionals. They are kids who enjoy learning, enjoy having fun, and most importantly enjoy spending time with their parents. If you can find 15 minutes per day to spend playing with your soccer player, you will build an enjoyment for the game, have fun together, and save a lot of money.
