What I’m Hearing About Job Openings in the League

As I shared previously, this is usually the ‘dead time’ in looking for a job in professional basketball. College teams have completed their staffs (although there is always transition!) and NBA teams are on a mini-break.

But something unique has been happening this year, almost all of the people reaching out to me have not been NBA related but G-League related. This includes job openings and references.

In the past, the G-League has always come secondary to the NBA. NBA teams fill out their staffs and rosters and then the G-League is up next.

But a lot of G-League teams are filling out their staffs right now. I think it says a lot about the G and the opportunities there. It’s no longer a ‘leftover’ league of the NBA, they’ve established their own brand and identity and it’s a league providing opportunities immediately and not waiting to see who might be left.

And for personnel (like yourselves), rather than waiting to see if an NBA opportunity comes available, they’re taking G-League opportunities that are currently available.

I have always recommended the G. It’s as good of league as there is at getting hands-on experience at everything. Whatever your job title is, you’re going to do everything. Want to coach? Well, you’re also doing video, analytics, and laundry. For those in the G, am I right?!

I always found those who had worked in the G to be some of the most prepared to work in the NBA. If you can work on a non-existent budget by simply ‘figuring it out,’ it’ll go a long ways towards being highly successful when you do have a budget.
