What does one say about the world’s coolest economist? Emily Oster is that economist. She’s a parent’s parent — doing the research grind so the rest of us can read her notes and evaluate everything from bedtime routines to extracurriculars to time-outs.
Most importantly (how I see it), Emily Oster has thought deeply about marriage. She’s evaluated the data on marital satisfaction and it is not good. By the time kids are in school the share of mothers reporting low marital satisfaction rises from 12% to 30%. The marriage does not recover until parents become grandparents. Yikes.
The good news is: data can help. And I brought in the Michael Jordan of data to help us think through it all.
In the latest episode of “The Inhabit Interview,” Emily and I talked about evidence-based habits for marital satisfaction, how to sometimes get children to eat vegetables, and why we should all go buy a kids’ book about a bear that eats a squirrel.
