I often romanticize the 1920s as an era that I first of know way too little about and that I still love. I love the fashion and the living style from furniture to how houses are built. It was the time between two world wars where people were still in some kind of recovery, but at the same time where people liked to party. At least that is what I think looking at old movies. Again, I do not know much about the era.
The movie “Dorothy Parker and her vicious circle” comes to mind and I cannot really help to wonder if we now 100 years later are also finding us in a big turnover. A turnover that marks a change that is significant.
It is more the idea that a decade I admired when I grew up is not as far away from my birth as I am old now. 100 years is a time frame that most people no longer can comprehend. Most people do no longer have any relatives that lived that long. And I think our actual knowledge and understanding of how people thought and lived is completely gone even going as far back as the 1990s.
I am cursed with some mild form of what is known as Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM). Meaning I remember way more than any conventional person about every day of my life. I am not as bad as some who literally remember every detail; but I remember way more and for much longer than most. My active memories start when I was 8 years old and in second grade. I used to get very frustrated when I assumed people retain the same knowledge I do, but then realized that hardly anyone remembers much of anything.
It is a curse, because with my memories I can recall all emotions I had as well. And that means anything shame related feels just as shameful as it did when it occurred 40 years ago. And any painful conversation is still just as painful as it was then when it occurred.
Did you know that most people make things up about what happened in the past? What conversations they had? The detail that was discussed? And then when you try to (gentle) correct them, they accuse you of lying to a point you start questioning your own memories?
I also used to really heavily take everything at face value. When you memory is so good, you take what you learned as a 8 year old and assume it stays true forever. That is not how life works, though. Things change. So, for me, it is really hard to override what I once learned. For the longest time, I assumed that distilled water will kill you if you drink it, just because that is what I was taught in school. I also assumed for the longest time that music that I heard in the radio was the band actually playing in a radio studio. Everything life. So, I always envisioned a long line of musicians waiting for their turn. This assumption was built by my own brain, because that is how music worked on TV during game shows. Some band would play and you could see it, so I assumed the same was true for radio. That happens when memories form really young and you build your own knowledge base out of it. Facts you build this way can go very very wrong.
I was not always smart.
I was just good at connecting dots. But those dots I connected were not always related. I made mistakes when I was little.
As a woman my age, I cannot help but really question everything I have ever known and learned, lately. It is nearly as shocking as when I learned that most radio music is just from a recording. Or that you can indeed drink distilled water without creating internal bleeding and dying a cruel death.
Like most Gen X women, I grew up at the backend of the sexual revolution with feminism in full bloom. I always assumed I was just a gender non-conforming woman whose sole purpose was to lead a successful career in a male dominant field. I leaned into the idea that staying home and caring for your kids was somewhat not only inferior but a dumb choice in life. I assumed that abortion was a fundamental female right and that the only thing holding women back from leadership positions were evil men.
I saw the world very black and white.
Lately, all I see now is a pendulum that swung miles too far.
Abortion has become a discussion that feels evil. I still believe that abortions should be legal, but am a firm believer in this having to be a very rare occurrence up to a very early time in pregnancy. Yet, so many women these days lead the vile conversation about how abortions need to be permissible until birth. This is absolute insanity. And I cannot believe that women lie their ass off and pretend there are medical reasons for it that would not equate to simple child murder and cannot be exploited.
What I learned in all my 50 years on this planet. If there is an open door, people will walk through and steal whatever they can. Not everyone, but enough people to destroy any positive idea behind that open door. There are no exceptions. Every charity organization is funneling the majority of the money to the people running it.
I was in shock when people supported Karmelo Anthony. I was in shock when people supported Luigi Mangione. I just rolled my eyes when people supported Jason Arday. And now women are supporting Lindsay Clancy with a passion that is completely misguided.
Fellow sane Gen X women, we have to step up and put an end to this. The common assumption that perceived minorities are just acting out, because they have been oppressed so long is completely wrong. What our generation has been subjected to is a long lasting brainwashing that forces us to be in a permanent fight against common sense, biology, and societal rules.
We have been lied to.
Motherhood is a female purpose and should be valued. It is not true that only a career is worth pursuing. Yes, some women have successful careers. But not every female will nor should every single woman aim for becoming a leader. Women make horrendous judges as they cannot separate emotions from facts and seem to be more interested in activism. They look at the world and all cases through the permanent claim that people of color and women are oppressed and immediately judge through a modified, typically more lenient lens. And so is everyone else. Instead of giving someone a fair trial, the majority of women seem to look for reasons why he could not have done it, and if he did it why somebody else is to blame for his actions. These women blatantly and with no shame ignore evidence and known facts to a point we can only assume it is purposeful denial of reality.
And since when do murderers need a go fund me page? What are we funding?
We have been absolutely brainwashed over the years.
I know so many women that are on some form of medication for their mental health. It is literally rare to find a woman my age who has never been on one and is not currently taking any medication for mental health.
Surprisingly, there are also very, very few women my age here where I live who have delivered a baby without C-section. The complete medicalization of motherhood is now complete. Motherhood is treated like an illness with medications and even surgery. Every hormonal shift is being “balanced away” and treated as a problem when a lot of these shifts just have to be dealt with because they are the result of normal biological processes.
I was crying for a few days straight after my daughter was born. Primarily, because I had never changed a diaper and did not know how. It was hard for me. It did not need to be had my mother not told me how much she does not like baby sitting and taking care of kids. This made me assume that kids are a burden and I better stay away from them.
Of course I love my kids. The beginning stages were just hard, but I soon learned that every month with your own kids is getting better. They learn. They grow. The interact. They learn how to talk and say the dumbest stuff that makes you laugh. And then they start saying clever things and it makes you feel somewhat stupid.
On a flight to Germany, my then 2 year old son yelled during take off: “This feels funny in my penis.” And of course everyone around us laughed.
My daughter, who was also 2 when this happened, once saw my son’s bottom during a diaper change looked at me and said: “I wish I had a penis, too, so I can pull it and play with it.” I can be lucky that no-one heard her or they would have assumed I was restricting her trans-ness. She is a normal girl with a boyfriend now.
Apparently, we talked a lot about penises when my kids were little.
What I am saying is that women my age have been so brainwashed into believing that motherhood and womanhood are a problem that an entire medical industry seems to have developed around treating it. And that a woman with no real issues somehow feels left out. You are just not interesting when you re not in treatment for you mental health. So many women are now looking for evidence of mental disorders or illnesses in themselves.
So many women claim they are autistic now or have ADHD. Or both. So many.
Honey, this is just your monthly cycle or perimenopause. It is normal.
Isn’t it bad that mental health issues in women are so normalized that a skeptic like me is now inclined to assume that most women are faking it and thus I am doing an absolute disservice to anyone who is truly and rightfully suffering? My current assumption is to simply think “bullshit” when yet another woman claims “a condition” as her own.
The medicalization is indeed a problem.
Women are prescribed birth control for acne early in their teens, so they never learn how a natural cycle actually feels with all the phases from I have superpowers to I am horny to my husband is so annoying just to start over again. We are depriving women of ever experiencing feeling what normal feels like. And if they do feel anything that is actually normal, they think something is wrong with them, because they are not permanently happy.
Then women have to go to the annual pelvic and pap exam always being told they need to watch for cancer signs. Often the DNA test is recommended to find the genetic markers that make you more at risk for cancer. And of course in those cases you have to decide whether you want prophylactic surgery; aka mastectomies.
People are now told they need 4th trimester care. Because of mental health issues. Again being told that when you do not feel your best and baby care is hard, something wrong with you.
Guess what. Taking care of a newborn is hard. They do not sleep well, cry a lot, and poop a lot. They are not the most exciting conversationalists.
Of course it is hard.
And normal.
And then as soon as perimenopause hits, you get smacked with a reverse puberty which sucks in itself. It is also normal. Sometimes harder than others. But again, if you feel anything, you are told it is wrong and medications are … just prescribed like candy. You are also urged constantly to go to mammograms for screening which is in itself a money making machine toying with the fear of women.
Gen X women, we need to stop piling onto this fear industry and instead teach our daughter a normal relationship with hormonal fluctuations and bodies. We need to stop assuming that you can control a body like you can control a machine. Here a pill and there a supplement and it works just perfect. That is not how the body will ever work.
Being a woman is not an illness. And it is not an excuse for doing bad things. We women have agency and are accountable for our own actions. That is what feminism should have enabled instead of the mess we have now.
Fellow Gen X women, we need women to stand up against the current misery and stop the fight against everything that is actually just normal and nature. We need to hold each other accountable for what we are saying and our actions. We need to stop letting the crazy ones interpret the law and set societal rules. We need to get back to just being women who believe that motherhood is good and necessary. We need to ensure that everyone understands that feminism has divorced us from our biological selves, common sense, finding a good husband, and our ability to care for our kids.
Instead feminism has taught us that children are secondary. That children are accessories at best. Feminism has allowed us to look away when we see other mothers hurt their children, because we only see her as the victim.
That needs to stop.
Let’s get back to a state of normal.
