Esa-Pekka Salonen Photographed by George Lange

This was one of the first assignments I did after moving to Santa Monica. I discovered that one of the donors to the LA Phil had an incredible collection of older instruments and allowed us to shoot at his house in Beverly Hills.

I am rarely the expert in the room. I may be good at taking pictures, but I honestly can’t believe the people I get to photograph. From all the celebs in Hollywood to the incredible people I am shooting in the next month. I showed up to photograph Esa-Pekka and thought "Where do I even begin?"

Esa-Pekka had just arrived in town and was carrying a lot of hope for the LA Phil and a lot of buzz. This is one of my favorite portraits and one that lived in my portfolio for years. Opening up the whole shoot was a thrill this past week - only 4 decades later

I am now the photographer for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO). It feels like this was the start of what I am doing now with the PSO. Intimate. Rich. Totally different from classical images.

I have been thinking about how I don’t prepare for the shoots. I like having a location that gives me a stage for the subject to play. Am I lazy just because I like being uncomfortable not knowing what is going to happen? I live for the smallest whisper of an idea I get and run with that

The music playing when I am shooting is THE most important thing.
