What Is My Animal Thinking?

That question bubbles up in almost every class I teach. Someone raises a hand, smiles a little sheepishly, and asks,

“Does my dog really know what I am feeling?”

Everyone smiles. Heads nod, and the stories begin. People who love animals carry these stories in their hearts.

“My dog always knows when I’m sad. She just rests her head on my knee.”

“My cat came and lay on my chest the night my mother died.”

“My horse stayed by my side every day after my divorce.”

“My donkey looked straight into my eyes, and I swear she understood exactly what I was feeling. It was like she was saying, ‘Everything is going to be okay.’”

One of the moments that forever changed my own understanding happened when it was time for my beloved soul cat, Wolfie, to leave this world. Our veterinarian gently suggested euthanasia that day. But so much of me wasn’t ready. Instead of making a decision immediately, I did something I had never really trusted myself to do before.

I asked Wolfie what he wanted.

Although I was just beginning to explore the possibility of communicating with animals, his response felt surprisingly clear.

He told me he was ready. But he also let me know he didn’t want euthanasia. He wanted to be at home with me. Then came the part I’ll never forget.

He told me that he would go between three and five AM.

That night, wrapped safely in my arms, Wolfie took his last breath at 3:30 AM.

Maybe I can’t prove to someone who doesn’t believe in animal communication that this is what happened. But I can tell you that it changed me forever.

Wolfie opened both my mind and my heart. He made me wonder whether communicating with animals is far more natural than most of us have imagined. Over the years that followed, through many extraordinary experiences, and just as many storms of self-doubt, and plenty of trial and error, I slowly learned that this kind of connection begins not by trying harder, but by becoming quieter.

This journey out of this world Wolfie shared with me eventually became the foundation of my life’s work. I realized I needed to share this sacred power with others.

In my classes and consultations, I feel people’s hunger for this clear connection.

“Sometimes my dog stares at me so intently, I feel like there is something he desperately wants me to understand.”

I’ve also listened to countless stories of dogs sensing that their person was sick before anyone else recognized it. Or about hummingbirds that hover nearby just at exactly the moment someone was in need of hope and reassurance in the goodness of the world.

Perhaps you’ve looked into your animal’s eyes and wondered...

What are you thinking?

Most of us dismiss these moments because we’ve been taught that communication depends on words. We assume that because animals don’t speak our language, they must have little to say. Yet every day they are communicating. Not with sentences. But with emotion and energy. It’s more than just body language; it is a subtle but clear intention to connect at a deep level. Animals communicate through the language of silence. They are masters of pure presence.

Animals feel us. They are extraordinary observers. They notice tiny changes in our breathing, posture, muscle tension, facial expressions, and emotional state, often before we become aware of those changes ourselves. And every behavior they display is communicating something. Every interaction is part of the conversation of connection.

The challenge isn’t that animals aren’t talking. The challenge is that many of us have forgotten how to listen.

Over the years, working with thousands of people and their animals through The Human-Animal Connection, I’ve witnessed something remarkable.

The deepest healing often begins when people stop trying to control an animal’s behavior and instead become curious about what that behavior is expressing. Instead of asking, “How do I fix this behavior?” I suggest we begin by asking,

“What is my animal trying to tell me?”

That single question changes everything. Frustration becomes curiosity. Judgment softens into compassion. And now the guiding principle of training becomes the quality of connection. I often tell people that I don’t simply help animals and humans to communicate. I help them strengthen their relationship. Like any meaningful relationship, the quality of the connection shapes everything else. This is where intuition becomes our quiet partner.

Intuition is not a mystical gift reserved for a select few. It’s an essential part of our animal nature. Like any ability, it grows stronger through practice, stillness, observation, and trust. The quieter we become, the more we begin noticing the subtle ways animals have been communicating all along.

Some people describe these experiences as feelings. Others experience images, memories, or sudden knowing. I call it telepathic communication. Whatever language we choose, the experience feels remarkably similar. A profound moment that reminds us we are far more deeply connected with animals than many of us were taught to believe.

Whether your companion has fur, feathers, hooves, or scales -- whether the animal you love now lives only in your heart -- there is always more to discover about the relationship you share. Perhaps your animal has been speaking to you all along. The next step isn’t teaching them to understand us. Rather, it is time to awaken our ability to understand them.

If you’ve ever wondered what your animal might be thinking, I’d love to invite you to watch my free introductory online class: What Is My Animal Thinking.

Sometimes the deepest conversations happen without words.

All we need is the willingness to truly listen.

Before you go, I’d love to hear from you.

Has your animal ever done something that you couldn’t quite explain? A look, a feeling, a coincidence, or a moment that made you wonder if there was more going on than words could express? Share your story in the comments. I’d love to read it.
