I publish The Compass on Substack as a way to help people find and navigate the path to a deeper, more transformative life with Jesus. About twenty years ago, while guiding a large church filled with young adults, I became aware of a growing hunger for something more than the shallow spirituality that marked contemporary church at the time. Some of them were convinced that Christianity offered no practices that led to a deeper life and they had started looking beyond Christianity to find anything that might satisfy their hungry souls.
Spoiler alert: it hasn’t gotten better when it comes to spirituality, but the hunger has increased.
I knew better, and I repented for allowing myself to get sucked into a kind of ministry that left hungry souls hungrier than ever. I started then shifting how I did everything in ministry to make available the rich practices and ideas that are embedded within the life of Jesus and in Christian faith. Now, The Compass continues to build and extends what I began years ago.
For those who have chosen to become paid subscribers, I offer more than articles, essays, podcasts, and interviews. I offer each month a spiritual formation practice tool that is custom-designed for your use for an entire month. The reason for a practice tool that lasts a month is that we know it takes at least three weeks to add, or change, a habit. It is slow work. It takes time to taste it, see it, try it out, stumble with it, tweak it, and finally make it your own. But once you’ve done that, you have developed a spiritual practice that will open up the way to deeper communion with Jesus. a different way to reach men and women who are hungry for a deeper life with Jesus.
So, paid subscribers get in exchange for their subscription all the articles plus the monthly practice tool, a fifteen-to-twenty minute video teaching aid, and an invitation to a live conversation where we can talk with one another about the practice tool.
For those who choose to become what I call Waymarkers, you get all of the above plus a monthly frameable photo of Glacier National Park nature scenes and wildlife. I live in the mountains near Glacier and the opportunities for stunning photos are endless and I love sharing them.
The August Spiritual Formation Practice Tool, Preparing for Resilience, and the video teaching aid is on the other side of the paywall. You can access both with a subscription. If you’re not sure, there’s a free trial waiting for you. You can start here whenever you’re ready.
