Thanks to those of you who came to the free portrait drawing session that Jennifer Orkin Lewis and I hosted last night. It’s great to see so many new faces at these sessions! I find these such a calm, meditative way to practice drawing faces. I can tell that I am improving with a tad more of them actually looking like the person! No idea when we will do another one - but I am sure that we will!
We have a zoom workshop this Saturday, July 25 from 1-3 EST.
I’ll paint a version of this pool scene, and Jennifer will focus on a landscape. I’ve painted this many times, each one is a little different. We always share all of our process paintings with you at the end. To me, this is as educational as watching us paint. You get to see how much goes into the process of figuring out how to make a painting we are happy with. You can choose to paint along, or just watch and paint from the video later.
Saturday, July 25, 1:00–3:00 PM EST
What people say…
“The benefits of having two teachers!’-- I like Jennifer’s deliberate marks, colors ways and figurative work. I like Gayle’s easy flowing, loose expressive style. Both styles are unique and encourage me to hone my own style of painting.”
“For this session, I liked how Jennifer started with painting an outline first. It was an easy way to get my feet wet! I liked the loose way Jennifer sketched - esp with the markers. I liked Gayle’s filling in the background first and her marks to depict the landscape and vegetation. I am drawn to the muted colors Gayle uses too.”
“This workshop with Jennifer and Gayle was wonderful! I really enjoyed following along as they painted and sketched - giving us details about their process, ideas and materials used. They graciously answered questions and had encouraging words for us all. These ladies are lovely and offer a very inspiring class. I’m looking forward to participating in many more!”
People, Pools & Landscapes: A Hockney-Inspired Afternoon with Gayle & Jennifer
This summer, join Gayle and Jennifer for an afternoon inspired by the color, pattern, and light of David Hockney — one of the most influential painters of the modern era, and a long-time touchstone for both of us.
Gayle will guide you through painting a figure in or near water: how to simplify a pool into pattern and rhythm, and how a graphic, uncluttered figure can hold its own against a bold, textured background. Jennifer will take you into landscape, using mixed media, some watercolor markers, acrylic markers, and paint, saturated color, flattened shadow shapes, and the kind of bold color-blocking that turns a hillside or garden into something almost electric.
You’ll come away with two new ways of seeing: one for water and people, one for land and light — and the freedom to bring them together in your own work.
All levels welcome. No painting experience necessary, just a willingness to play with color.
This is a space to loosen up, try new approaches, and enjoy the process—no pressure, just paint, or just watch and paint later!
A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where creativity thrives
A short show-and-tell to kick things off
Two 40-minute live painting demos — you can paint along or simply watch and soak it in
One artist paints while the other stays active in the chat, answering your questions in real time
A recording of the full session will be available afterward for all registrants
Show and tell at the end. We love seeing what you’ve done.
Each session is a reminder that there’s no one right way to make art — your interpretation is your strength.
