America’s national debt just crossed $40 trillion and there’s no talk of doing anything to stop it.
How big is $1 trillion? If you spent $1 million every single day starting with the birth of Jesus, you still wouldn’t reach $1 trillion today. It would take until the year 2740 to hit that milestone.
Yet, America is $40 trillion in debt.
According to the U.S. Debt Clock, if that burden were split evenly, every American citizen would owe $116,492—or $360,794 per taxpayer.
As Proverbs 22:7 warns, “The borrower is slave to the lender.”
It took 40 U.S. presidents to reach the first $5 trillion in debt. President George W. Bush doubled that total to $10 trillion over his two terms. By the end of President Barack Obama’s two terms, the national debt had nearly doubled again to $19 trillion.
Thomas Jefferson famously warned that future leaders would be tempted to borrow money to boost short-term popularity, effectively shifting the financial burden onto future generations. Today, his warning reads as prophetic.

Do you struggle with a short fuse?
As Christians, our ultimate goal is to become like Jesus. But think about how He responded when He was betrayed by a close friend, falsely accused, beaten, mocked, and nailed to a cross.
He didn’t lash out. Instead, He prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).
That kind of response isn’t natural—it’s supernatural. His glory truly was to overlook a transgression.
Whenever we feel the urge to hold a grudge or strike back, we need to remember Scripture’s stark warnings: “Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer” (1 John 3:15), and “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).
We live in a culture consumed by outrage and uncontrolled rage. A slight comment can spiral into violence, and “road rage” headlines leave us wondering why people can’t control themselves. The root issue is simple: they don’t know Jesus. To truly know Him is to be transformed into His likeness.
If you battle a bad temper, don’t just try harder in your own strength. Repent, ask the Holy Spirit to transform your heart and emotions, and draw closer to Jesus through His Word today.
