Surely there is a great deal of speculation beneath the pablum fed to us daily by the political media. Who dares say out loud what they really think? Or are they thinking at all beyond repeating the same questions over and over?
Well, here’s a thought:
Mitch’s ‘fall’ was not the cause of his injury or continued absence. It was the result of an intra-cranial event, a bleed, a stroke.
My suspicion is that it was a left-sided event, possibly serious enough to have rendered him temporarily unconscious, but not serious enough to have seriously impaired his conscious presence. Nevertheless, I suspect Mitch has lost some cognitive function, but most particularly his speech.
They say he broke no bones. If he did not break anything, why has been in ‘intensive’ therapy? Because, like any other patient in such a condition, treatment is directed to restoring as much of what was lost as possible, and as soon as possible, including mobility, cognition and possibly speech.
What his family, doctors, and the Republican establishment want is for him to return to his job. But we have not heard him speak. We have not seen him stand or move. That is likely because he cannot do either-at least not independently.
We might also surmise that he has lost some motor and cognitive function, We don’t know how much, but quite possibly enough to make unassisted movement, and participation with his staff in performing the office of being a senator either diminished or impossible.
I predict he will not return. But the GOP will do anything possible to cover for him.
Beshear’s rising pressure on Mitch to show up is a step in the right direction. Personally, I would look into setting a date for him to be fully forthcoming about his condition, to either return to the job or be declared incapacitated, whereupon Beshear can appoint a successor to complete his term.
