The Case Against Mondays

Gary Shteyngart · Gary’s Journey Through Hell

On Sunday nights, I eat like a hog and drinks like a sailor. I know the horror of what lies ahead. I never ever work on the weekends, but on Mondays I whip out the old laptop and write for three hours in bed. This also happens on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Is all that effort worth it? Who knows? But I really do think the horror of Mondays must be dealt with by our society. Hence, a proposal.

Let’s get rid of Mondays. Seriously. Let’s switch to a four-day work week. The glories of Saturday and Sunday will lead to the relative terrors of Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but no Mondays will be allowed! Four days work, two days pleasure. The ratio of work to pleasure will be 2-to-1 as opposed to a cruel 2.5-to-1. And in this way we would still be able to say, “I work twice as much as I rest.”

But how will the calendar work in such cases? Brilliantly!
