When checking a product label, look for these chemical names that indicate the presence of formaldehyde-releasing agents:

DMDM Hydantoin: The most common FRC found in hair products, occurring in approximately 58% of those containing these preservatives.

Imidazolidinyl Urea: Frequently used in shampoos and conditioners, often paired with parabens for broad-spectrum protection.

Diazolidinyl Urea: Known for releasing more formaldehyde than most other common FRCs.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds - Behentrimonium chloride, and stearalkonium chloride can cause scalp, skin or eye irritation or contact dermatitis from these compounds.

Quaternium-15: Highly sensitizing and linked to allergic reactions; it has been banned in the European Union.

Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol): Sometimes used in low concentrations but can release formaldehyde.

Mineral Oil / Petroleum: These heavy, cheap fillers sit on top of the hair, creating a greasy, artificial “slip” without actually moisturizing or nourishing the cuticle.
