Collectorzone: Atari 2600 TRON Collector's Pack

Today, I’m launching a new regular feature on Gaming Retro — the Collectorzone. Building on my recent work on ComicBook.com, I’m exploring auctions and sales of valuable and intriguing hardware, games, and related retro gaming collectibles.

Right now on eBay, you can get your hands on a mint condition Atari 2600 controller along with a sealed copy of the Tron: Deadly Discs video game, released in 1982 by Intellivision.

Published on the M Network label, the game is factory sealed, and both Tron: Deadly Discs and the Disney-licensed controller are available on eBay for $165.001. Note that unlike the arcade game controller that it resembles, the controller shaft does not rotate.

But the price isn’t the most interesting thing about this bundle. Because this isn’t a single lot — it is one of 47, with 50 already sold.

So, how did around so many Atari 2600 TRON Collector’s Packs end up on eBay in mint condition?

Full details about the background of the joysticks are currently unknown. What we do know is:

• 120 factory-sealed Tron Joysticks for Atari 2600 were found

• They had been abandoned in a warehouse since 1982

• The joysticks and cartridges are still in mint condition

The bundles might be surplus stock from Disneyland in California, where some social media posters recalled they had seen them for sale when the resort had the PeopleMover Thru the World of Tron experience.

Beyond that, solid facts are sparse, but the seller has some great reviews.

eBay is not the best place to do business, so I was gratified to see some reassuring notes from the seller, pandarcade. Importantly, they describe the quality of the game and the joystick (the games are all sealed with the original shrink wrap; the joysticks are in brand new condition, remaining in the “original factory plastic bag protector.”

There is also a note on the seller’s focus on careful packaging and shipping, which adds a sense of confidence if you’re thinking of making an offer on one of the remaining bundles.

2. Official TRON Joystick (Disney, 1983):

Authenticity: Genuine 1983 TRON-branded controller, licensed by Disney.

Condition: The unit is Brand New inside. It remains in its original factory plastic bag protector.

Note on Vintage Condition: Due to being stored for over 40 years, the outer plastic bag may show some minor aging or dust. However, the joystick itself is untouched and in mint condition.
