Yesterday, Game Makers Iceland hosted a Studio Visit to Porcelain Fortress, a game studio founded in 2017. They’ve made a few games, most notably 2019’s No Time to Relax, a humorous, quirky life simulation game where up to 4 players online or locally compete against each other in the ultimate game of life. The game is a sort of spiritual successor to Jones in the Fast Lane, a social simulation game for MS-DOS which also featured a board game motif and didn’t take itself too seriously.
During the visit, we were treated to a fun presentation by the studio’s co-founder, Bjössi, about the ‘laws of game development’ and what he has learned from his long career making games. It was insightful, perhaps painfully relatable at times, and last but not least funny. Following that we were invited to playtest their upcoming game, Walk of Life.
Walk of Life is a follow-up to No Time to Relax. Porcelain describes the game as “a hilarious life simulator where players duke it out in the rat race of mundane living”. Check out the announcement trailer:
I really enjoyed playing it and it’s clear to see that lessons learned from No Time To Relax have been applied to Walk of Life. What hasn’t changed is the quirky art style, emphasis on fun (and funny) gameplay moments, and the absolute hijinks you can get up to when trying to not only win at the game of life but at the same time, prevent your friends from doing so. It’s super enjoyable and I can’t wait to see it come out and for players around the world to experience it. 👏
The game is set to release into Early Access in October. In the meanwhile, you can already wishlist it on Steam. I encourage anyone with a Steam account and even the slightest interest in the Icelandic video game industry to go ahead and wishlist the game because it helps the team out a lot with building visibility and momentum ahead of their Early Access launch!
Huge thanks again to the team at Porcelain Fortress for hosting us!
