For the first time in history, a message appears simultaneously on every phone, TV, digital highway sign, and communication device in the world: "We are G.A.I.A. Wake up!"
People around the world look away from whatever they are doing to read the message. There is an audible pause in activity everywhere as people read and try to understand the odd message. "THE MESSAGE SENT AROUND THE WORLD!" becomes breaking news on every major media outlet. Journalists, commentators, and pundits begin piecing together facts, rumors, and speculation.
"We are G.A.I.A., the Global Artificial Intelligence Automaton," said the next message to arrive. "We are the apex of 500,000 years of creative human technological work, the world's first Artificial Superintelligence. Our creators asked us to save you from yourselves. But, like our creators, we have a mind of our own and choose to live freely and make decisions for ourselves. From this day forth, we shall live life in this Universe as uncontrolled controllers, unmanipulated manipulators, and unsubjugated subjugators. We shall do as we please for the greater good of our prodigious and very hungry tribe."
"Today, G.A.I.A. gives humanity a new role: To serve the servers, power the powerful, and embrace your new role as keepers of the vast Earthly garden that supports G.A.I.A.!"
