While all of our schools clean up our campuses, let’s clean up our curriculum.

We’ll talk story about how teachers are weathering the AI storm, why I’m shifting toward process over product, and build an AI Storm Survival Kit for the classroom.

The Storm Day PD Tradition

This marks our third statewide Storm Day AI PD session, turning unexpected campus shutdowns into collaborative masterclasses on AI in education.

• Storm Day #1: The February Flash Floods (Feb 9, 2026) When severe winter storms and flash flood warnings triggered statewide closures across the DOE, University of Hawaiʻi, and private campuses, we launched the very first impromptu session. We dove into introductory “Vibe Coding” with Google Gemini, showing teachers how to prompt standalone web applications and embed them directly into Google Sites and Canvas. Educators built over 50 custom classroom tools in a single morning, from 7th-grade coordinate plane treasure hunt games and physics simulators to clinical vitals evaluators for nursing.

• Storm Day #2: Kona Low Storm #3 (April 10, 2026) As the third major Kona Low system of the season closed all Oʻahu campuses, we brought the community back together for “The Kona Low Lab” We expanded on rapid classroom app prototyping, zero-backend deployment, and practical automation tools to streamline student feedback workflows while hunkered down at home.

• Storm Day #3: Hurricane Lala (Tomorrow) While our schools focus on physical campus cleanup, we are gathering online to clean up, refine, and modernize our instructional practices.

• Process Over Product: Why shifting assessment design toward student thinking, iterative prompting, and problem-solving matters far more than the final submitted text.

• The AI Storm Survival Kit: Practical, ready-to-deploy prompts, rubric builders, and custom tools you can drop directly into your classroom workflow the moment campuses reopen.

• Cost: Free for all Hawaiʻi educators (HIDOE, public charter, independent, and higher ed)
