Camp Laurel South Podcasts

Junior year of college, I spent my summer in Casco, Maine working as a counselor at Camp Laurel South. Not only did I live in-cabin with a handful of teenage girls, but I developed a brand new podcasting program.

An activity area that had never existed before, podcasting was offered to campers ages 11-16 for two three-week sessions. I helped create the recording studio and daily curriculum with the help of the inter-arts director. Over the course of the summer, I taught 20 children how to use a mixer and different types of microphones, how to conduct interviews, and how to develop show ideas into episodic concepts.

Although the campers did not have hands-on experience with the editing process, I took their direction on sound effects and music to help create a podcast that was exactly as they envisioned.

In total, I edited over 80 camper podcasts varying in length from 7-25 minutes, all with different styles and subjects.

Below are samples of two shows that I recorded, produced, and edited.

Moosetracks - Two campers aged 11 and 15 wanted to create a show focused on interviewing administrative staff to learn more about the mission statement and history.

It All Started With an Opinion - Four campers ages 12, 13, and 14 wanted to create a show that everyone around camp could participate in, while incorporating trendy social media formats.
