Keep a good heart. That’s the most important thing in life. It’s not how much money you make, or what you can acquire. The art of it is to keep a good heart. - Joni Mitchell
Coming off of a long week into a long weekend is a natural progression this time of year as fashion week in NYC begins to poke its head around the corner. These recent, rare morning moments of solitude in SoHo have been cherished greatly.
A friend of mine from Texas passed away last weekend, and a beautiful friend from NYC lost a loved one as well. These instances, though slightly removed from my personal, day to day experiences, weigh heavy on my heart, up close, and from afar. Keeping a good heart through it all, is all you can do.
In regard to this quote above, that the correlation between the numerical prowess of one’s acquisitions is not related to, or relevant toward, the maintenance of a good heart is a wonderfully deep thought. One key distinction here is laid in the verbiage. Keep instead of go find, or try. The reason why the verb used is keep is because a good heart is something we all naturally have. It is what we all share intrinsically as humans. Maybe not always literally, some people have an off-beat or a bad valve, but spiritually, all hearts are good.
You probably think I’m a broken record here, telling you all people are good and that when they do bad things it’s because they don’t know about their goodness, and their heart. But moving along and assuming you’re not tired of the record on repeat, how do you keep a good heart even if you know you have one? And if we all have one, where does it go when it theoretically turns bad? Well, it doesn’t go anywhere, it’s still there inside of you. Similarly to the separation of church and state, a bad action is not correlated to your goodness, but it is correlated to how you feel about your worth. I was going to go into some details and thoughts on the separation of church and state, but there’s a great new South Park episode that does a far better job than I could, so you should go watch that instead.
Bottom line, see your heart, see it’s good, keep it and work it for good, and if you do bad, it’s okay, you’re still you, you’re still good, and with effort and discipline, you can get back there, to that good place.
