After a few days in Lake Como, we packed up the car and continued our road trip south to Liguria.
The drive from Lake Como to Santa Margherita Ligure took around three hours, and as soon as we arrived, everything felt completely different. We traded the mountains and elegant villas of Como for colorful buildings, focaccia, beaches, and the Ligurian coastline.
This was my first time staying in Santa Margherita Ligure, and I honestly think it’s one of the best places to base yourself if you want to explore Portofino. It’s only around 10 minutes away, has its own beautiful beaches and restaurants, and feels much more like an actual town.
In this guide, I’m sharing where we stayed, the beaches we visited, exactly how we spent a day in Portofino, the beach club inside a cave, and some of the best food I had on our entire road trip.
For this trip, we stayed in an actual castle, which sounds significantly more expensive than it was.
We booked two nights, and our room had air conditioning, which was absolutely necessary during summer. The property was around an eight-minute walk downhill to the center of Santa Margherita Ligure, so once we checked in, we could easily leave the car and walk into town.
I’ll add the exact name and booking link here.
After checking in, our first priority was food.
