Co słychać? Słychać szelest igły przebijającej się przez materiał, by stworzyć napisy na okładkę nowego wydawnictwa The Dresden Dolls, oraz odgłosy cichej ekscytacji autorki haftu, która będzie otwierać pierwszy koncert tego duetu w Polsce, 2 września 2026. Ale o tym za chwilę.

Najpierw sprawy najbardziej bieżące. W tę sobotę, 25 lipca (g. 19), zapraszam Was na łąkę przy Polin (Muzeum Żydów Polskich) w Warszawie. Zagramy w duecie z Wojtkiem Traczykiem materiał, który lata temu powierzył nam do realizacji Miron Zajfert: wiersze Rywki Kwiatkowskiej-Pinchasik w moich autorskich aranżacjach. Jest to poezja bardzo szczególna, bo dokumentująca życie w Getcie Łódzkim i późniejsze losy autorki. Wartość ludzkiego życia (ale i wartość piękna i nadziei z tego piękna czerpanej) w realiach wojny, uchodźstwa i faszystowskich reżimów - temat bardziej bieżący, niż wszyscy byśmy chcieli. Pomimo ciężaru tematycznego mam nadzieję, że pogoda nam dopisze. Wstęp jest wolny. Żałuję, że Miron nie będzie mógł usłyszeć nas w tym repertuarze jeszcze raz.

Moja wybitnie utalentowana przyjaciółka, Amanda Palmer wraca do Polski, po raz pierwszy w ramach swojego rodzimego zespołu The Dresden Dolls, z Brianem Viglione na perkusji. Ten duet zmienił moje muzyczne życie. Szczególnie album “Yes, Virginia…”. Pamiętam dokładnie ten dzień, gdy usłyszałam po raz pierwszy “Dirty Business” na Myspace’ie zespołu. (I am myspace years old) Z tym większą radością przyjęłam wiadomość, że postanowili nagrać go ponownie, uwalniając swoje utwory spod niepodzielnej władzy dawnej wytwórni (na modłę tego, co wykonała Taylor Swift, czy w nieco mniej medialnej odsłonie, lata wcześniej, Suzanne Vega). Stąd “Yes, Virginia… Tailor’s Version” - wersja skrojona na miarę roku 2026.

Wyhaftowałam napisy na okładkę płyty. Powstało wiele wersji - szukaliśmy odpowiedniego ściegu, odpowiedniej grubości i koloru. Największym wyzwaniem dla mnie było zrobienie wystarczająco dobrych zdjęć gotowych projektów! (Nowe umiejętności, hej). Zostały potem zmodyfikowane i włączone w fantastyczną grafikę autorstwa Nikki McQueen ( https://www.instagram.com/nikimcqueenart/ ).

What’s that sound? It’s the sound of a needle stabitty-stab-stabbing fabric, embroidering the lettering for the new Dresden Dolls album cover, and the murmurs of quiet excitement from the embroiderer, who will open the band’s first ever Polish show in Warsaw, on September 2nd. But more about it later.

First things first. This Saturday, 25th July (7 pm) I’ll be playing on the meadow next to Polin (The Museum of the History of Polish Jews) in Warsaw. We’re performing as a duo, with Wojtek Traczyk on bass and double bass, and the material is special: commissioned years ago by Mrion Zajfert, and only performed twice, as far as I remember, the poetry of Rywa Kwiatkowska-Pinchasik with my own music. It’s a very special kind of poetry, documenting the life of the Lodz Getto, and the author’s later trials and travels. It’s about the worth of the human life (and the worth of beauty and the hope that beauty is able to deliver) in the circumstances of war, exile and fascist regimes - a subject matter I wish was less current.

Despite the heaviness of the themes, I hope we get good weather on Saturday. Admission’s free. I only wish Miron could see us perform, once again.

I will be opening both these shows!

My brilliantly talented friend, Amanda Palmer is coming back to Poland, this time with the mothership of her original band, with Brian Viglione on the drums. This duo changed my musical life long before I met Amanda. I’ll never forget listening to “Dirty Business” for the first time on myspaces (yes, I am myspace years old and then some). Especially the album “Yes, Virginia…” - the greater was my joy when they announced the new version of this very record, pulling what we now can safely call a Taylor Swift, and reclaiming the songs from an ancient record deal that no longer served anyone. (sidenote - Suzanne Vega actually pulled something of a Taylor Swift long before that. But that’ sa bit of a different story)

Hence “Yes, Virginia… Tailor’s Version” - a version tailor made for 2026.

I embroidered the band name and title for the new album. I made many versions (this is a sample), testing stitch types, colours, and thread weight. The biggest challenge was producing adequate photos of the artwork (one learns new skills all the time). They were later skillfully modified and incorporated into the magnificent artwork by Nikki McQueen ( https://www.instagram.com/nikimcqueenart/ ).
