It is amusing to think that a whole generation of men who grew up watching action films now work for insurance companies and banks. While it’s no brag, yesterday I put in an ultramarathon day of thatching in one-hundred-degree heat. Nine consecutive hours of manual labor on a scorched earth is not fun. My colleague puked twice and had to retire early to the air conditioned cab of the pickup. Another colleague showed up late to help. After an hour, they looked me in the eyes.

“This is insane.”

“Know who Leo Tolstoy was?”

“Who?”

“Well, he was famous and he was rich and he had everything, but he was also suicidal. So one day he leaves his life behind and goes off to the country to work with some peasants. They were not famous or rich, and they were also not suicidal. Old Leo spent a few days with the peasants, then he went back to his estate and wrote his masterpieces.”

“This is still insane.”

“Fair.”

But we were in the process, and just as in a true ultramarathon, the point is to finish reg…
