Canadian Politics For Kids - Weeks 5-10

Jody started out on a mission to write a classroom curriculum for a Christian Homeschooling Co-op Pod on the subject of Politics and Law. The classroom would be for teen-aged students. The proposed request was centered around a “Know Your Rights Package” that Jody had put together back in the summer of 2021 when Canadian Rights and Freedoms were being systematically stripped away by a Globalist Regime that had infiltrated our Government Bodies. The classroom agenda developed into a one-time in-person class session which turned into a 10-day in-person class room experience that was both rewarding and educational for all involved over a two and a half month period. To say this experience was educational for all is an understatement! The students, aged 12 to 17, 15 in total, were curious, engaged and highly participatory. What started out as a, yawn, Politics Class, turned into a class of much discussion, endless questions, exciting ideas and detours in learning!

The plan was to start with a course outline for the month of October, with the understanding that we may need a day or two in November to complete the October outline, followed by a class trip to Question Period at the Parliament Buildings. The outline included subjects such as: The Levels of Government, The Judicial System, Bills and the Constitution. But like most well thought out plans, not everything will go as planned when you forget to include time for the spontaneity of enquiring minds!

Day One - How Does a Bill Become An Act; sounds fairly mundane, but not when you start the discussion with the question, “Who here has an allergy?”. That was the beginning of opening hearts and minds to the fact that Politics is far from boring and most certainly a subject that not only children need to pay attention to and understand, but the adults that surround us too. That one question sparked endless desire for more information. That one question forged an intense interest in the one thing in life that most of us do not pay attention to; Politics. That one question created an intense desire to want to show up, week after week, for more information, more discussion and more learning of how we can, together, take back and repair our great nation.

We never did complete the October Course Outline. The thirst for knowledge ended up steering us down other pathways of gold. We did cover How a Bill Becomes A Law from beginning to end and The Canadian Bill of Rights; and, we touched on, repeat, only touched on The Constitution Act and The Charter of Rights and Freedoms that were on the October course outline. That was were the outline stopped being our guide and the questioning minds of the students became our leader of studies. Two assignments, presentations by each of the students, would take our class time together to the end of the 2024 session. The students became the teacher and Jody became a guide to further discussions.

The end result, not one that was thought of in advance, was critical thinking skills were mapped out in a safe and inclusive environment all while acquiring the ability to apply the knowledge learned to our present day surroundings. As a bonus, the future leaders of tomorrow learned it was okay to ask questions, no question was a dumb question, and in fact, do not be afraid to ask questions, because each question is a chance to learn or expand our knowledge. Knowledge is power! Growth only happens with knowledge. Our world can only improve with the ability to freely ask questions and expand our knowledge. Oh, and Jody’s personal favourite, Lego Land Bills may appear silly at first, but upon further questioning and perhaps some teenage teasing, we learned that Lego Land Bills can have some very serious and real consequences in life that would have been easily missed had we not looked under the hood and explored the framework with questions!
