Everyone had a blast at this year’s End of Summer Reading party! 350 guests joined the Library and the Friends to swim, play games, get free books, eat treats, and pick out prizes for their participation this year. What a fantastic way to end the summer and celebrate reading!
But this program is about more than a great party. The library staff put together a wide array of innovative programming to keep kids engaged all summer long, and local businesses donating prizes. We know that early exposure to reading promotes overall academic achievement and positive outcomes for children and families and that’s exactly what this program is about!
Even the Mayor came to party! Mayor Garcia’s support of the library and our community shined through as he handed out prizes and thanked our incredible library staff for all their hard work. Here he is with youth librarian rock-stars Kate Cornwell, Tiffany Paisley, Susan Reynolds, and Lydia O’Reilly. Thank you Mayor Mike!
A huge thank you to everyone who made the program and party possible. But most of all, thank you to all the parents, guardians, and teachers who help the children of our community explore and engage with reading everyday!

¡Todos se divirtieron muchísimo en la fiesta de clausura del programa de lectura de verano de este año! Unos 350 invitados se unieron a la biblioteca y a los Amigos de la Biblioteca para nadar, jugar, recibir libros gratis, disfrutar de bocadillos y elegir premios por su participación. ¡Qué fantástica forma de terminar el verano y celebrar la lectura!
Pero este programa es mucho más que una gran fiesta. Es un esfuerzo serio para evitar la pérdida de conocimientos durante el verano y ayudar a los niños a sentirse seguros y con ganas de comenzar el año escolar, listos para triunfar. El personal de la biblioteca organizó una amplia variedad de innovadoras actividades para mantener el interés de los niños durante todo el verano y los negocios locales colaboraron donando premios para los participantes. Sabemos que el contacto temprano con la lectura fomenta el éxito académico general y genera resultados positivos para los niños y sus familias; ¡y de eso trata precisamente este programa!

The Friends is excited to welcome a new member to our Board of Directors.
Kat Albert is an advocate for stories—and what better place to champion them than the public library, the great intellectual equalizer?
She is an independent filmmaker who believes in story-first productions, working across music videos, branded content, and documentary film. But her love affair with libraries and reading started long before filmmaking. In the 90s she founded K-READ, a marketing and promotions firm that worked with states and public libraries to promote the joy—and importance—of reading.
Kat graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in advertising and a minor in art history. She continued her education through the University of Chicago’s publishing program and Columbia College’s Center for the Book.
Serving with the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library feels like a wonderful return to her love of books and libraries. She is particularly interested in helping make the library a place that feels relevant, welcoming, and, yes, genuinely cool to younger and more diverse audiences.
At home, Kat dotes on her shelter dog, Stella, and serves as studio assistant, occasional muse, and general helper to her husband, who works in micaceous clay. Stella, naturally, considers herself the real boss.

The Friends is incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer team. They run both our library bookstores and special sales which raise money that gets turned into programming at all three library branches throughout the year. And, they are committed to outreach through community partnerships and book donations. It starts with your donations of lightly used books. Our sorters categorize and set aside titles for different purposes, and eventually the books make their way back out into the world.
Some important partnerships our volunteers support are the Christus St. Vincent’s Library Cart program, the Penitentiary of New Mexico library and the Santa Fe County Jail library. With help from library staff, and our own School and Community Resource Center, these organizations receive book donations from The Friends that have a positive impact on hospital patients and those serving time or awaiting trial.
It can be easy to forget how a small act of generosity can have a huge impact. But for those trying to heal in a hospital, often frightened, alone, and in pain, having a good book in hand can raise their spirits and hopes to assist in the healing process. For incarcerated readers, it can bring comfort, joy, and connection to the outside world.
A special thank you to Kristin Slater-Huff the Volunteer Services Manager at Christus St. Vincent, Roseanna Andrade, a Santa Fe Public Library Technician and Friends volunteer, and Laurie McGrath, a Friends bookstore volunteer, for your commitment and ongoing partnership. About the author:
Carla Chung Mattix served for more than 25 years as an attorney for the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of the Solicitor. Her work focused on environmental and natural resources law, cultural and historic preservation, and Native American issues. She holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
