A Note From FFNY

The first heat wave has hit. Thick New York heat you never forget.

The city smelling faintly like garbage, ganja, and golden summer nights on the horizon.

Maybe it’s all the recent conversations around simpler times for being an artist in New York, and the feeling of how much possibility we once had, but every New Yorker seems to carry around their own version of “when New York was really New York.”

Part of what I’m trying to explore through these conversations is not just nostalgia for a vanished city, but the eternal cycle of New York itself.

The people who shaped it. The ones who built scenes, sounds, styles, parties, movements, communities. The people who gave the city its one of a kind energy the world always wants to imitate.

And then what it feels like when your city changes without asking your permission. And the grief in that. Even though we get that the magic to New York is in the constant becoming of it.

FFNY In Conversation podcast is about that push and pull.

Yes our old haunts. Those sweet memories when we broke night and we knew the city belonged to us.

And like everyone else who has ever loved New York as hard as city kids can, there’s always a desire get that feeling back.

Or maybe not back, but just the way it felt when we first understood we were on the inside of it and fully molding it to what it became beloved by all.

The people who give themselves to this city eventually develop the same complicated relationship with it.

Our connection to it. Our pride. Our Sophistication. Our separation from it. And the grief of it no longer ours in the same youthful, reckless who gives a fuck way it once was.

That’s what this podcast is about.

Remembering our New York and what we built and passed on to its legacy, but also asking; what is it now, what should it become, and who are the people fighting to give the city its one of a kind soul.

This week’s episode features nightlife icon Christina Visca reflecting on the dance floors, communities, characters, that helped shape some of New York’s most electric golden years on a dance floor.
