Sunday Stack

I’m loving all the produce that’s in season right now. Corn on the cob with butter and a sprinkle of sea salt, blueberries right from our bushes, garlic that I planted last fall…the best part of summer.

If you want to add some color to your egg basket next spring, now is the time to start thinking about some different breeds to add to your flock. Chicken keeping has gotten so popular, many of the breeds sell out almost as soon as the hatcheries open up their orders. You can place your order as soon as they start taking orders in the late fall/early winter, but scheduled delivery for the week in the spring when you want to get your chicks. Here’s a handy guide if you’re looking for colored egg layers.

I’ve had this book in my TBR pile for awhile, and finally decided to crack the book open. So glad I did. It’s good so far. Fingers crossed. I love a good twisty novel.

Speaking of twists, I love a good suspense or thriller movie as well, but I ALWAYS worry as soon as they introduce the family dog or cat. I worry so much about whether something bad will happen to the family pet, I miss half of the movie! So I’m grateful for this website where you can actually find out in advance and make sure the pet survives! The site also includes other trigger warnings as well. Check it out!

It was so hot yesterday, I didn’t feel like cooking, so I just tossed some grilled peaches with homemade garlic ciabatta croutons, crumbled bacon, lettuce, fresh mozzarella, and scallions with a honey mustard mayo dressing and it was perfect. My husband even said, “I liked it more than I thought I would.” (He’s not a big fan of fruit in his dinner salads!) This is definitely going into our dinner rotation. 🍑🥓🥬🍞🧄 There’s no real recipe per se, but it’s a variation of a salad I shared in In Season.

A broad-winged hawk has moved into a tree along our driveway. My husband has seen it nearly every morning on his morning walk with our corgis. And we hear the hawk screeching off and on all day. Broad-winged hawks are fairly small, but I think it would still go after the chickens if given the chance, especially the smaller ones. Fortunately, it will be migrating to South American in about a month, so while it’s been neat to spot in the trees, I’m glad it won’t be a permanent fixture here! We’ll see if it comes back next spring. (We’re not sure if its a male or female since they look nearly identical.)

We now have a volunteer wild blackberry patch! It appeared out of nowhere, likely from birds leaving seeds in their droppings. There’s nothing quite like sun-ripened berries warm in your hand. Thank you birds!
