After a bit of a heatwave, the weather has settled back down. This is the New England summer I remember from my childhood. Mid 70’s during the day, 50’s at night, just enough chill in the morning and evening that you throw on a hoodie or wrap yourself in a light blanket. And I’m here for it!
With more than 100 different breeds of chickens, it can be difficult to choose just one - or five! - for your flock. There is no one “best” breed, but depending if egg production, heat tolerance, or temperament is most important to you, this might help.
My husband grew up in Rockport, Massachusetts and I’ve been many times to visit his family, so to spot familiar places in the new-ish Apple series Widow’s Bay which - though set on a fictional island in New England - was shot mostly in the Rockport area was a lot of fun.
The series is billed at “a horror-comedy”. I’m not normally a fan of horror (at all!) but the comedy aspect is strong and I really loved this series. And I’m not alone, it got 19 Emmy nominations! Matthew Rhys is excellent in it, starring as the mayor of the beleaguered island. (He’s also great in The Beast in Me with Claire Danes. Definitely check that out too on Netflix if you haven’t seen it.)
We had some peaches that really needed to be eaten, so I made this delicious Peach Almond Galette. Galettes are so easy to make - even easier if you use store bought crust (NO judgment from me!) - and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, absolutely dreamy.

I sent a copy to my mom with no notes… I can’t wait for her to flip through it and see my story. She’s going to be so surprised!
I love flowers! They’re the one saving grace about summer in Maine - that and almost unlimited lobster! We have lots of wildflowers and perennials in gardens and the fields around the house and I’m constantly amazed at how many butterflies, and bees, and other insects the flowers attract.
