Today we’re opening one of the great classics of French literature: Le Grand Meaulnes.
It’s also the only novel Alain-Fournier ever wrote.
Published in 1913, the book became a success almost immediately. Less than a year later, its author was dead, killed during the First World War at just twenty-seven years old. What remains is this singular novel, inspired in part by his own memories and by a real encounter that would leave a lasting mark on him.
The passage we’ll read today is one of the most famous in the book: the first meeting between Augustin Meaulnes and Yvonne de Galais. A boat crossing silent water, a mysterious estate, a landscape that feels almost enchanted, and the beginning of an obsession that will shape the rest of the story.
