Bree West · Free the Bree

Welcome to the series where I share memorable moments from late nights on the dance floor that are too good to forget.

The other night when I was partying in the woods, I met some lovely people. They reminded me of why I enjoy going out to these types of places because of the people they attract.

On the way in, someone I know came up to me and said,

“It’s Bree, my favorite influencer”

I was stunned.

First of all because it was dark in the middle of the night in the woods and that was the last thing I was expecting to hear in an accent. And second, because of what she called me. An influencer.

If you’ve seen me on the internet outside of Substack, then maybe you’ve had the same thought as her, but I’ve never considered myself to be that.

Influencer has such a negative connotation. It makes me think of someone who gets by on their looks and doesn’t offer value when I do the opposite.

I’m OOZING value because I want to help people feel comfortable and at peace with themselves. Posting on the internet is just a faster way to reach more people outside of my immediate circle.

An author? Sure.

A travel planner? Slightly.

A dance and embodiment guide? Loading :)

But an influencer?

It’s made me think about how I’m perceived in the world by what I share, and it’s made me think about the word “influencer” and how I wish there was a cooler word for it like,

E x p a n d e r

I’m simply expanding people’s realm of understanding of what’s possible for them, like the way friends have done for me, by living my life.

Like yes you can quit the job that no longer satisfies you and travel the world without a plan.

Yes you can marry a foreigner and move abroad.

Yes you can overcome your social anxiety and make friends wherever you go.

I guess in the end, I’m describing an influencer. I just wish that some people didn’t attach negative feelings to the word, including myself.

Recently someone referred to me as a journalist which felt like such an honor. My new YouTube series feels like its own form of journalism, now that I think about it.

Have you seen it yet? I recently shared about the underground rave scene in Paris. I wrote a Substack post about what’s happening underneath Paris, besides the parties.
