Nothing clarifies life in Oracle like a series of falls. Bane of the aging, falls account for all kinds of bad outcomes in Oracle (and nationwide).
A few days ago I found myself flat on my back in our small bathroom and even with Kaz’s help couldn’t get up. Our first call was to OFD. Three strong EMTs showed up in a matter of minutes! Lifted me easily, expertly respecting my surgically repaired shoulder, and settled me in the recliner we rented for my 6 week recovery period. Wow! A week later, after a post-surgery checkup in Oro Valley, getting out of our CRV the same thing happened with the same result. OFD came through with flying colors…again.
Up close and personal, we’ve lived through multiple fires and threats of fires that elevate OFD to our first line of defense. But our experience with falls was a first for us adding a dimension to our appreciation for our small town firefighters/EMTs. Yes, “thank you’s” are in order but at a deeper level so is acknowledging OFD’s role in building and sustaining our community. The Oracle Community Center Board of Directors gets it right honoring Oracle Fire Department Chief Robert Jennings.

Political divisions - left, middle, right - evaporate when practical people address real life challenges together. So it is and has been for quite a while here in Oracle. Our consensus is broad and deep enough that it is literally the water we swim in.
Not that folks around here don’t passionately embrace “politics” by voting and advocating for candidates of their choice. But behind the scenes where the actual work of community building goes on, collaboration is the order of the day. Flat on my back Oracle’s EMTs didn’t ask who I voted for.
These days Oracle’s leading lights shine generously in all directions. How they operate sets a high standard for the town as a whole. Our nation would do well to be more like Oracle as we celebrate 250 years of nationhood.
