I found the following conversation with GPT inspiring. And I was amazed at everything that I learned about orcas. Whatever the final explanation for their behaviors turns out to be, this is a fascinating topic.

But why do you think that a “category-sensitive restraint” is a concept different from or distinguishable from “moral”?

And I suspect your objection is that people often redefine “morality” into something mysteriously transcendent or uniquely human in order to preserve human exceptionalism.
If an organism:
distinguishes categories of beings,
modulates aggression accordingly,
exhibits restraint,
recognizes agency,
responds differently to vulnerability, kinship, reciprocity, or social status,
then calling this “proto-moral” or “category-sensitive” instead of “moral” may simply be a rhetorical maneuver to avoid granting continuity between human and animal ethics.
Especially because human morality itself is largely category-sensitive restraint.
Humans do not apply one universal rule uniformly. We distinguish:
family,
tribe,
allies,
enemies,
children,
animals,
foreigners,
persons,
sacred beings,

And our moral emotions track those categories.
