I drove aimlessly that day. I stopped for fuel, bought food I didn’t end up eating, and somehow found myself parked beside a river without remembering how I got there. I just sat there chewing my fingernails, something I hadn’t done since I was a kid, staring through the windshield while my mind replayed every moment that had brought me there.
I thought about the day I’d met Sarah, the day I’d proposed, the day we got married, and somewhere between those memories and the silence in my truck, something inside me finally broke. I sat gripping the steering wheel until well after dark, unable to bring myself to drive anywhere, or back to the house where I knew I was no longer welcome.
