BOWIE, Md. - A domestic shooting in Bowie, Maryland, left a mother of six in critical condition Thursday evening and led to the arrest of a suspect, according to city police.
What we know:
Officers were called to a home on the 8500 block of Myrtle Avenue around 4:20 p.m. following reports of a shooting. When they arrived, officers found a woman inside a bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper torso. She was taken to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Police arrested a suspect in the front yard of the home and confirmed that he had a romantic relationship with the victim. Officers also recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.
According to two family friends who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the victim is a mother of six children, including a newborn. Some of the children were reportedly inside the home when the shooting occurred. Police noted that the victim's children will receive assistance from social services.

Bowie Police, homicide detectives, and a forensic team remained on the scene processing evidence behind police tape into the evening. When asked if officers had previously responded to the residence for domestic violence calls, police stated that detail remains part of the ongoing investigation.
A neighbor who asked to remain anonymous told FOX 5’s Shomari Stone "This is a quiet neighborhood, and I’m just shocked because nothing happens over here. We don't have anything going on over here, so I'm in absolute shock."
When asked if she ever saw any problems at the home, the neighbor said, "No…No ruckus, no nothing."
"It's always sad when something happens in this community," said Bowie Police Deputy Chief Robert V. Liberati, Jr. "This is a family. They're a part of this community. They lived here for a number of years, I understand."
Officers characterized the incident as a "tragic domestic crime" and emphasized that there is no threat to the broader community.
Police have not yet released the suspect's name, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
