From Point A to the Builder You Want to Become

Every builder has imagined a future version of themselves.

The one speaking confidently on a stage. The one announcing a major funding round. The one building a company that others admire and study. From the outside, it often looks like they reached that point through one defining moment- perfect timing, or so it seems.

Three weeks ago, at Founders Connect Live, we spent an entire day listening to founders who have built remarkable companies across different industries.

They spoke openly about the decisions they made, the mistakes they survived, and the moments that shaped them. By the end of the day, one thing became impossible to ignore.

Not one person described a single breakthrough that changed everything overnight. Instead, every conversation pointed to something much more encouraging - years of showing up, learning, adapting, and continuing to move, even when there was no guarantee that the effort would pay off.

That realization answered a question I imagine many builders have asked themselves.

What actually moves someone from Point A to the room everyone else hopes to be in?

This isn’t a recap of Founders Connect Live. It’s an attempt to answer that question using the lessons that surfaced again and again throughout the day.

One of the most interesting themes from the conversations was how differently successful founders think about luck.

Olumide Akinsola and Fola Olatunji-David approached the subject from different experiences, but they arrived at almost the same conclusion. Luck rarely appears out of nowhere. More often, it finds people who have spent years placing themselves in environments where opportunities can eventually find them.

That sounds far less exciting than waiting for one life-changing moment, but it is also far more empowering.

When people look back at their success, they often remember the breakthrough. They rarely notice the hundreds of ordinary decisions that quietly made the breakthrough possible.

Perhaps luck isn’t something you wait for. Perhaps it’s something your consistency eventually attracts.

Another conversation challenged the idea that successful careers are supposed to follow a straight line.

Uzoamaka Oshogwe studied Chemistry before earning another degree in Information Systems Design. She spent two decades in banking and now leads Transcorp Hotels. Looking only at the job titles, the journey seems almost random.

Until you stop looking at industries and start looking at capabilities.

Every role developed a different skill. Every season prepared her for decisions she would eventually have to make in a completely different context.

Many builders worry that they’ve wasted time because their careers don’t follow a predictable path. The conversations at Founders Connect Live suggested the opposite.

Very few experiences are truly wasted if they teach you how to think, solve problems, lead people, or understand customers. The detours often become the advantage.

One moment from the event captured this better than any speaker could have.

An attendee had travelled from Kano just to be part of Founders Connect Live. After introducing himself to one of the founders and mentioning that he had come all the way from Kano, the founder walked him across the venue and introduced him to members of the Founders Connect team and other builders in the room.There was nothing transactional about the interaction.

No one was trying to close a deal.

No one was calculating what they might receive in return.

It was simply one builder recognizing another person’s effort and making sure they felt welcome.

We often describe networking as though it’s a technique to master, but the best relationships rarely begin that way. They begin with generosity, curiosity, and a willingness to be genuinely helpful.

Over time, those small moments compound into trust, and trust has a remarkable way of opening doors that strategy alone never could.

During the open AMA session, Paul Onwuanibe was asked how his team found the strength to keep building after the demolition of Landmark Beach.

He described a series of decisions.

His team asked themselves whether they wanted to become bitter or become bigger. Whether they wanted to stop or continue growing. Whether they wanted to spend their energy mourning what had been lost or building what could come next.

None of those choices removed the difficulty of the situation.

They simply determined what kind of people they would become because of it.

Later, he offered another framework that felt equally practical. People, he argued, consistently spend money on only three things: solutions, convenience, and experiences. If your business doesn’t clearly provide one of those, then there’s probably more work to do before thinking about scale.

As the conversation came to a close, he shared a thought that many people repeated throughout the rest of the day.

“It may not happen today. It may not happen tomorrow. But if you stop trying, it will never happen. You have to be prepared to fail to succeed.”

It was one of those statements that felt obvious the moment you heard it, yet somehow became more meaningful the longer you thought about it.
