Grant Opportunity for Police Agencies; Legislative Updates; A Sweet Reunion

The President signed the Medal of Sacrifice Act into law in late May; it’s a bill that establishes a new honor for officers killed in the line of duty. The National Police Association (NPA) was pleased to endorse it.

This bipartisan bill, another that the NPA endorsed, passed in the Senate by voice vote last week. It requires the DOJ to develop an evidence-based treatment program for police officers and other first responders.

It’s been referred to the House, where it will hopefully make its way to the Judiciary Committee. It has not yet been formally introduced in the House.

This bill, currently being considered in the Ohio state legislature, will ensure that those who intentionally murder officers face the full force of Ohio law.

It passed the Ohio House in March and was deliberated on in the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee this past week. One of the House bill sponsors asked the NPA to submit testimony and we obliged. You can read our testimony here.

While we’re grateful for these legislative successes, bills like the Protect and Serve Act, Pearl Act, and U.S. Park Police Modernization Act continue to languish in Committee.

With just five months until the mid-term elections, the window to get these critical bills passed this session is quickly closing. If the Judiciary has time to hold hearings on bills like the Sports Broadcasting Act (it’s about NFL and sports streaming), they can certainly devote time to shepherd bills that support our nation’s officers.

Especially considering that police agencies continue to struggle with staffing levels; that officers suffer from mental health disorders and take their own lives in higher numbers than the general population; and that per the FBI 90,178 officers were assaulted in 2025, marking yet another 10-year high. In 2024, that number was 85,730, which at the time was also a 10-year high.

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched the Model Cities Initiative, a $300 million dollar investment for hiring police officers, investing in equipment, tackling crime, and such.

Applications are open to local governments with populations over 100,000, and are due by September 1.
