7 Police Shootings, 7 Departments: This Week's Bodycam Breakdown

Seven officer-involved shootings this week, from seven different departments, and no two of them ended the same way. Incident date and footage release date on every one.

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS, NEW YORK — NYPD. Incident July 25, 2026. Released August 14, 2026. A wife called 911 from the street: shots inside, her husband had a shotgun, she had seen a body on a bed. Officers set a perimeter and called the house over and over. Nobody picked up. ESU was stacked at the door preparing to make entry when the house exploded. Fifteen to twenty seconds later a 33-year-old man walked out of the fire carrying the shotgun and wearing a tactical vest with extra ammunition. He refused commands and officers shot him. He survived. His mother and sister were already dead inside. He is charged with murder, attempted murder and arson. NYPD’s Force Investigation Division still has the shooting and has not ruled on it.

HENRIETTA, NEW YORK — Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Incident August 9, 2026. Released August 20, 2026. A wife called 911 three times. Her husband was suicidal and had cut his wrists. Deputies were told he was suicidal, had a knife and had already cut himself. They found him in a Super 8 bathroom with a box cutter. On camera he says “What?” and then “I can’t hear you.” Roughly thirteen minutes after the first call he was dead. His family says he was deaf. The City of Rochester says the word was never used on any of the three 911 calls. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has the case and has not ruled.

WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, OHIO — West Chester Township Police Department. Incident June 4, 2026. Footage shown publicly June 5, 2026. A neighbor called 911 about a woman screaming next door. Officers reached the woman inside by phone, and she told the officers on that line to come in. They forced the door. From upstairs, the man yelled that he had a knife to her neck. They found him in the bathroom holding her in front of him as a shield. A sergeant with twenty years on fired one round. He died at the scene. She was not cut. Three other officers had an angle and none of them fired. A grand jury returned a no bill on June 16 and called the shooting justified.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Incident September 11, 2024. Released August 21, 2026. A welfare check turned out to be a hostage situation. On tape the man told the woman to say she was okay or he would shoot her. An officer at the back window confirmed the gun. Two patrol officers worked the door for about ten minutes with no SWAT team and no negotiator, then forced entry. He fired at them. Both officers returned fire and hit him twice. He survived, the hostage walked out physically unharmed, and a jury convicted him in June 2026 and sentenced him to 38 years. The shooting itself was never publicly ruled on.

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — Irvine Police Department. Incident July 21, 2026. Released August 14, 2026. A 20-year-old called 911 on himself and said he was armed with a knife, wanted to hurt himself, and was ready to possibly harm others. Irvine responded with patrol, a crisis negotiation team and I-CARE, the city’s unarmed civilian crisis response unit. They talked to him for over an hour. Then he charged an officer with the knife raised and was shot and killed. His family says he was autistic; the department has never used the word, though it has confirmed prior mental health responses and I-CARE contact going back to 2025. The Orange County District Attorney’s review is open.

FINDLAY, OHIO — Findlay Police Department. Incident August 10, 2026. Released August 17, 2026. A man stood in a motel parking lot with a handgun, waving it and pointing it. Officers spent roughly forty-nine minutes trying to talk him down and counted ninety-two separate commands to put the gun down. He kept telling them to shoot him. One officer told him nobody wanted to. Then he raised the gun toward officers and one officer fired a single round. He died at the hospital. Ohio BCI is investigating.

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA — Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Incident October 27, 2025. DA report August 19, 2026, bodycam excerpt August 20, 2026. A traffic stop for expired tags turned into a two-hour standoff. Deputies brought a negotiator, a psychiatric emergency team, commands in two languages and a drone. He told them he was suicidal and that the only way this ended was if they killed him. Pepper balls failed. Forty-millimeter rounds knocked him down and he got back up. He came out with a nine-inch blade and charged at a dead run. Two deputies fired six rounds at a measured twenty feet. The county District Attorney cleared them this week.

Three of the seven were men who wanted the police to kill them. That is the pattern this week, and it is the pattern most weeks. The officers who handle those calls are the ones who live with them afterward.
