Summery hues are skipping into view: deep green verdant hills, bold beach-towel stripes, drippy, fruity popsicles. Suddenly, we find ourselves creating road-trip playlists, building smores to eat under the stars, singing with the crowd at a baseball game, or smiling as we scrub garden soil from under our fingernails.
A word is floating on the breeze, and it calls us back to Eden. Rest.
As the six of us respond to the theme of Rest, notice what emerges in your own soul. Here is Kami’s perspective.
The grey, weathered fence in our backyard has created a four-cornered haven for three bunnies. We have named these bunnies Skip, Mary, and Nibbles. (Although their names could be Thistle-Whip, Pansey, and Pip. Who knows?)
The wooden fence displays wide cracks where the bunnies slip into and out of our neighbors’ yards, as they please. I commissioned a wild patch of ground near the bunnies’ hole to be left to its own verdant whims, untouched by a homogenizing lawn mower. A Monarch Butterfly alighted on the Wild Patch yesterday to sample what it had to offer. I hope she stays. I may scatter a packet of wildflowers to attract her even more.
When heat and humidity cause summer growth to deepen, the northwest corner of the fence will be overrun in a waterfall of leafy vine, shading and hiding the bunnies who play in a backyard deprived of trees.
Deprived of trees, yes, yet abundantly supplied with nature’s little delights.
In the center of this haven is a sage-colored bird bath, complete with a water bubbler. (I can hear the water bubbling when I open my window a crack). There are finch feeders, oriole feeders, and woodpecker dough. A large pot of geraniums and a plate of water on the ground for squirrels and robins ensure everyone is welcome.
This is Four Corners – a small haven in an otherwise insignificant backyard where I cultivate rest.
Here, I observe, imagine, reflect, and delight. I pause . . . I slow down . . . I pray.
I wish I could capture the vibrant magic of rest and pour it into a bottle for you to sip from when life is moving, streaming, rushing, and swirling all around you.
Thankfully, I don’t have to do that for you. You can bottle your own magic wherever you are. It might be in a park, or in a plant you observe at a dentist’s office. Maybe it’s when you sit in the corner of your bedroom, against a window, and the only thing of nature you can see beyond concrete and stone is blue sky and white clouds.
Find it. Keep it a little wild. Then rest inside of it. Inside of Him.
